Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey was fined $8,467.74 by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Thursday afternoon, the maximum amount allowable under the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The offence took place during Tuesday’s game against the Washington Capitals, in which Morrissey checked T.J. Oshie, with Oshie then being slammed to the ice.
The incident drew comparisons to a similar event in which Mike Matheson of the Florida Panthers slammed Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks to the ice.
Matheson was suspended two games for that, setting a standard of punishment for similar future hits.
Morrissey is a repeat offender, following his suspension in April of this year for cross checking Eric Staal in game four of the quarterfinal series against the Minnesota Wild.
The Jets next play tomorrow night against the Buffalo Sabres. The Jets and Capitals play again on March 10th.
