Scouting the Winnipeg Jets 2017 NHL Draft: Cody Glass prospect profile

Synopsis:

It’s absolutely fitting that Cody Glass patents his game after Patrice Bergeron as they are both dangerous two-way centremen who can put the puck in the net. After graduating from the AAA Winnipeg Thrashers in 2014-15, Glass has spent the past two seasons with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. From humble beginnings, Glass broke out on the scoresheet in a big way this past season, finishing with 32 goals and 94 points, good for a 1.38 point per game pace.

Glass has been on the radar of scouts all season, sitting eight in Central Scouting’s midterm ranks before achieving a final rank of sixth. His height of 6’2” will be seen as desirable to many NHL teams, but he will likely look to bulk up from his weight of 178 lbs. Nevertheless, he possesses a very high ceiling and would be a good fit in a top six role.

Scouting Report via Jeff Marek:

Has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the draft rankings since the start of the season. Great skater, skilled playmaker and joins the impressive list of high-end players coming out of Portland.

Fun Fact:

Cody was named the co-MVP of the Portland Winterhawks in 2016-17. He also hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Why a fit with the Winnipeg Jets:

Forget the fact that Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little are top two centre’s on this club right now. There is a real possibility they could be losing one of Andrew Copp or Adam Lowry during the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft (Ed. Note: The expansion draft will take place before the NHL Entry Draft but due to the timing of this article, we will deal in hypothetical terms for the moment), not to mention both fit the model of a fourth line centre much better than they do a third. I am of the notion that you can never have too many bullets in the chamber and, if available at their pick, one could argue that Glass would be the most talent player left on the board for the selection.

Cons to the selection:

Much like Owen Tippett before him, there is a very real possibility that Glass will be selected somewhere between picks five and twelve, shutting down the possibility he skate for his hometown team. Furthermore, there will be some who decree that the Jets should draft another area of need rather than centre. Also note that highly touted prospect Jack Roslovic plays centre and this selection could block either Roslovic or Glass from the NHL roster.
