From Price to Pavelec: a new goalie evaluation scale

New, comments

Instead of using fancy graphs, how about a common-language goalie scale?

Carey Price is one of the most efficient and consistent goalies in the game while Ondrej Pavelec is neither efficient or consistent. Therefore, a scale in easy to understand rankings is in order. With a median of James Reimer, the ranking should be easy to understand and grade goalies on.

Since Price is basically the image of a perfect goalie and Pavelec is the image of the worst type of goalie possible, using two extremes can lead to a large scale. However, it is important to remember that when it comes to Price and Pavelec is they both occupied the same space until last season: starting goalie in the NHL.

If almost any hockey fan can visual what Price plays like and what Pavelec plays like. Being able to talk about goalies in easy to understand terms with comparisons seems better than saying “they are a starting goalie in the NHL” because Pavelec was a starting goalie in the NHL.
