Winnipeg Jets Sign Sami Niku

The Winnipeg Jets have signed the 198th pick from the 2015 entry draft, Sami Niku. Niku was a seventh round pick. He has played for JYP in the Finnish Elite League for the past two seasons. He also spent time in the second tier league last season.

The Jets desperately need more defensive depth and tgis move should help with that. While Niku is not an elite player, he has played in the top league in Finland for a majority of the past two seasons. He has also played in the past two World Under 20 Championships for Finland.

Based on his resume in Finland, Niku officially joining the Jets prospect pool is welcomed news and he should help the team moving forward, at least with their depth problems. Niku’s signing puts the Jets at 43 contracts, well under the 50 contract limit. Niku could still play next season in Finland.
