Jets sign Ehlers to a seven year extension

The star forward will be around for a long time in Winnpeg

With Jack Eichel signing a mega deal last night for the Buffalo Sabres, the Winnipeg Jets went ahead and signed one of their young stars to one as well.

Nikolaj Ehlers is in the last year of his entry level contract, and is coming off a season where he scored 25 goals and added 39 assists. Locking the 21 year old down throughout his prime years for an extremely reasonable price is a major victory for General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff.

At an AAV of just six million per year, Ehlers is signed to an extremely team friendly deal that should keep plenty of space open for a Patrik Laine extension in the next few years, in addition to possibly freeing up space for both Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey next year.

It’s a good start to the regular season for the Jets who will take on Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs tonight to open their season.
