Winnipeg Jets sign Brandan Tanev

The Winnipeg Jets signed college UFA Brandan Tanev from Providence College today. Tanev is not a high scoring player, but seems to have shown steady improvement while at Providence College for the last four years. He is the younger brother of Chris Tanev, who is a defenceman for the Vancouver Canucks.

Tanev has been signed for the remainder of the season and the Jets did not say where he would be finishing the season, though they did call up Chase De Leo on an emergency basis this morning as well. It seems as though Tanev will be a RFA this off-season meaning the Jets will have to sign him again shortly.

Tanev is not a high scoring player, but he should be an asset to the Manitoba Moose in the AHL at least as he is already 24 and has never been much of a scorer. College UFA season is usually kind of crazy with older players being sought after when they have one good season out of no where. As long as Tanev is not promised a spot anywhere, there is no reason to think that this signing is anything more than something to help build some organizational depth.
