As a staunch Jets fan, I was hoping for a bit of action on trade deadline day. You know, a bone thrown to the fan base that TNSE was committed to the short term. Then, the deadline of 2 pm on Monday February 29th came and went, and not so much was a fire cracker tossed. No pop or fizzle. No deals. No steals. Nothing seemed to happen. Or did it? You see, no action is actually action. The Jets didn’t move for Boedker, whose deal is perceived as a bit of a puzzler for the Coyotes. The Jets didn’t buy the bluff for Pirri, who wasn’t the ace up the sleeve for the Florida Panthers after all, and was moved for a 6th rounder. Finally, the Jets didn’t sell the farm for Drouin, whose bad behaviour won’t be rewarded by any GM in the league at this point. The Jets stood firm. In all, the Jets have 2 first round draft picks, a great player in Dano, and a cupboard full of prospects. Down the line on June 24th & 25th, more prospects will come the way of the Jets, while July 1st brings the opportunity to re-sign Andrew Ladd via free agency, albeit to a reduced salary, term and role. A new captaincy will be announced in the summer too, paving the way for next season. But, in the meantime, there’s a game to be played, and this time, it’s against the re-tooled Florida Panthers, who have made the trade deadline push to see the playoffs.
