Winter Olympics Sochi 2014: Qualification Round Men’s Hockey Recap

Slovenia 4 – 0 Austria

Recap: Slovenia raced out to a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back against Austria, earning a 4-0 win and their nation's first trip to the Quarterfinal Round. Anze Kopitar scored the game winner on the power play and Robert Kristan had another strong, 30 save performance.

Russia 4 – 0 Norway

Recap: Powered by two Alexander Radulov goals, Russia outlasted a feisty Norway squad to punch their ticket to the Quarterfinal Round. Lars Haugen performed admirably in goal for the Norwegians but alas they could not sustain the offence required to be a legitimate threat to Russia moving on in the tournament. Sergei Bobrovsky calmly deflected 22 shots in the victory.

Czech Republic 5 – 3 Slovenia

Recap: The Czechs scored four unanswered goals thirty minutes in and it appeared the route was on. However the Slovaks fought back with three goals of their own (two by Marian Hossa), making things interesting in the waining minutes of the third period. However, a Tomas Plekanec shorthanded empty net goal ensured that the Czech’s would move on to the next round. Roman Cervenka finally showed some of the offensive flair that brought him to the NHL last season, scoring twice in the Czechs win.

Latvia 3 – 1 Switzerland

Recap: Holy Dina, what an upset! Of all the slam dunks in the Qualification Round, Switzerland moving on to the Quarterfinals was of the slam dunk-iest. Apparently the Suisse didn’t factor running into Edgards Masalskis, who was sensational in net for the Latvians in the win. Leaning heavily on first period goals from Oskars Bartulis and Lauris Darzins, Latvia would hold Switzerland’s scoring in check for most of the game. Darzins added an empty net goal late in the third, ensuring victory for Latvia and a trip to the round of eight.
