Winnipeg Jets at the World Juniors: Comrie Starts

After a strong game and an emotional day, Nikolaj Ehlers and team Denmark have a well deserved day off. The remaining five Winnipeg Jets prospects will be in action, highlighted by team Canada going head to head with team USA.

Yesterday's Tournament Action

Nik Ehlers was the only Winnipeg Jet who skated yesterday. He had another solid game, tallying one assist as well as generating numerous opportunities. He also picked up a goal in the shootout, but the story of the day was Georg Sørensen. The Danish netminder battled his ass off, stopping 42 of 45 shots, plus two of three in the shootout (Nik Ehlers' Halifax teammate and expected 2015 1st round pick Timo Meier scored the lone goal), on route to a 4-3 Denmark win over the Swiss.

The win was Denmark's first ever in this tournament and their celebration was must see stuff, even TSN labeled it must see stuff despite the fact that they cut off the broadcast before the anthem and player awards – thus preventing people from seeing it – on the live feed. Thankfully they provided a link so you can view it on the Internetz.

The win was huge for team Denmark and may have big implications on who lands in relegation, but more on that below.

Another ridiculous assist by Nik Ehlers:

And a BIG hit:

And a slick shootout move:

Flight Schedule

Denmark does not play today, but they have a major rooting interest in today's game. They will be rooting hard for Russia and against Winnipeg Jets prospect Jan Kostalek at the hope of having their team avoid the relegation round. The Czeck team needs a regulation win to stay alive. The Danes need a Czech loss (regulation or OT) or a Swiss loss in regulation in order to advance.

And then there is Canada versus USA. The big game, where Winnipeg Jets prospect Eric Comrie will be between the pipes and the tournament's leading scorer (also a Jets prospect) Nic Petan will take on a US team that is expected to contend for gold. Oh, and Josh Morrissey has a point in each of the last two games. Oh, and McDavid vs Eichel.

Oh, and the winner of this Canada vs US will finish atop the Group A standings. No big deal.

Happy New Years folks! Stay safe. Enjoy the games!
