Monday Morning Altitude Check: “Expect the Unexpected”

Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what's going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets and elsewhere in the NHL.

Here is what's in the news for Monday, April 8, 2013:

Winnipeg Jets' news:

Diggin' the lede to Paul Friesen's Jets' article this weekend: "Forget Fuelled by Passion. The Winnipeg Jets team slogan should be changed to Expect the Unexpected." [Winnipeg Sun]

Kevin Cheveldayoff talks about signing University of Denver goaltender Juho Olkinoura, who will be joining the St. John's IceCaps shortly: "He was going to leave school and we expressed interest and I think this will work out well that he can get right into the system and start developing. A lot of people in our organization have seen him play and he is a competitor. He has shown some good attributes that a pro goaltender should." All your NCAA goalies are belong to us! [Winnipeg Free Press]

Missed this from a few weeks back but the IceCaps' have signed Vinny Saponari to an ATO. He is currently pointless through four games. [Western College Hockey Blog]

Check this out, Melissa Martin has cracked the Jets' Da Vinci Code: Evander Kane carries this team offensively and the team lives and dies by his scoring input. [Winnipeg Free Press]

Around the NHL:

Here's some crazy news: The NHL is potentially playing an outdoor game in Los Angeles next year. Before y'all freak out, know that the league hosted an outdoor game in Las Vegas during the 1991 season. That said, it's a tad warmer in California during the winter months than it is in Nevada. [SB Nation]

Oh and I guess it's important to mention that the NHL will be hoping in the '81 Delorean to play last year's Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs New Year's Day of 2014. Hopefully HBO will overlook the league's stupidity and bring us another instalment of HBO 24/7 Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs. [SB Nation]

More talk relating to the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes. Please let this saga end. [Puck Daddy]

With two goals last night, Alex Ovechkin has pulled into a tie with Steven Stamkos for the NHL lead in goal scoring. Here we go! [Washington Post]

Finally, here is a list of NCAA prospects who have recently signed with NHL clubs. [Western College Hockey Blog]
