Winnipeg Jets Power Rankings Compilation – April 10, 2013

Ed. Note:  Due to the NHL trade deadline taking place last Wednesday, we missed a week of the Power Rankings Compilation as there was too much going on.  My apologies if you were/are offended.

Every week, various MSM sites put out their NHL Power Rankings, and every Wednesday during the season we compile them in one tidy chart for your viewing pleasure. You can click on the logo to go to the full rankings from each site. And without any further adieu, here are where the Winnipeg Jets rank this week:

Getting thumped in back-to-back games by Washington, in Winnipeg, is hardly a recipe for moving up the rankings, but getting D Tobias Enstrom back in the lineup Sunday was a decided positive.

The Jets were absolutely crushed at home in back-to-back nights by the Caps but had a nice response Sunday night with a win over Tampa.

Winners of six of their last eight, the travel-strained Jets have a good a shot as anybody to seize the final Southleast crown – and No. 3 seed in the East – before realignment pushes them westward. (“Never woulda happened if Grabovski was in the shootout,” mumbles a bitter Leafs fan.)

They would love to have that Caps series back. They had back-to-back home games against the Caps and lost them by a combined 10-1. Again, that was at home. Talk about missing one (or two).

They split four games at home in a very busy week, with both losses coming to the Capitals. The recipe remains simple for the Jets — play at home like they did last season, and a trip to the postseason is in the cards.

If it weren’t for the Capitals, the Jets would have the inside track on a playoff position. Take out their matchups against Washington and the Jets have won their last five at home. In the three MTS games against Washington, however, Winnipeg is 0-3 and has been outscored 13-1.

Back-to-back losses last week to the Capitals made the Jets’ grasp on the division much shakier. A victory against the Lightning (and the team’s new interim coaching staff) on Sunday helps, but Winnipeg needs to avoid any letdowns — unless it wants to fumble the Southeast lead like Tampa Bay and Carolina have done already

I appreciate their winning record, but I just can’t muster much excitement for this team’s prospects. Winnipeg has the 26th-ranked power play in the league (14.3 percent), which will kill them in the end if it doesn’t get a lot better. The penalty kill (74.3, 24th overall) isn’t much good, either. Yet, the Jets entered Tuesday in first place in the Southeast Division. Which says it all about the Southeast Division. But if you don’t have good special teams come playoff time? Fuhgeddaboudit.

It shouldn't be a surprise that the justification of any drops in the rankings involved the two horrible losses to the Washington Capitals. However, for the most part the Jets remained in the top-16 of the league, which as we all know is all you need to do to see some playoff hockey come May. As for SI.com, well, let's just say that I put less than zero stock in anything Adrian Dater has to say about hockey, but for some reason he still gets paid to talk puck. Sigh…
