Altitude Check: Friday, July 6, 2012 Winnipeg Jets News Headlines

Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what’s going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets and elsewhere in the NHL.

Ed. Note: Now that we are through with the Stanley Cup Finals, Altitude Check will only be running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Here is what’s in the news for Friday, July 6 2012:

Former Calgary Flames head coach Brent Sutter shared his thoughts on new Winnipeg Jet Olli Jokinen. He had nothing but nice things to say, even going so far as saying, “This past season, there’s no doubt Olli, from start to finish, was our top forward.” [Winnipeg sun]

Here is a nice little breakdown of exactly why Olli Jokinen struggled down the stretch next year. [Jets Nation]
Winnipeg Jets prospect and St. John's Ice Caps player John Albert talks about resigning with the organization and how well he's been treated by True North. [The Telegram]

You guys may remember hearing something about Zach Parise and Ryan Suter signing with the Minnesota Wild, well my favorite baseball write breaks down. Gabe explains how they spent $200 Million to remain average. [NHL Numbers]

After Parise and Suter signed, free agency started moving again. Unfortunately is started moving towards Tampa Bay. The Lightning signed free agent D man Matt Carle to a 6 years contract. The Lightning now have some pretty insane depth on defense. [Raw Charge]

The lightning are also in the mix for Bobby Ryan, along with the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators. [Ottawa Sun]

The Edmonton Oilers have resigned Devan Dubnyk. I am trying to pretend that this doesn't make me mad. Say what you want about Dubs, but he has put up pretty solid numbers over the last two seasons. I suppose it is possible his stats were propped up by an elite Edmonton defense… oh wait… [Oilers]

An interesting piece on how to rebuild a team without tanking to last place. [NHL Numbers]
