Al Montoya is a Winnipeg Jet

The Winnipeg Jets have found a new backup goaltender in former New York Islander Al Montoya. The market for free agent goaltenders is decidedly thin and Jets fans were getting more and more nervous as each name came off the board. After hearing that GM Kevin Cheveldayoff had struck out on resigning Chris Mason, Jets fans had heard zero goaltending news. The wait is over! Now that we have a backup I am sure Jets fans are breathing a sigh or relief.

I personally see Montoya as an upgrade over Mason. Montoya posted similar numbers, but was crapped on a little more. While Mason may be a calming veteran presence, Montoya has been better in recent years and he should take some pressure off Ondrej Pavelec.

Montoya's deal is reportedly for 1 year and $601,000, so it is a cap friendly zero risk signing.

What do you think of the Jets signing Al Montoya? Let us know.
