Altitude Check: Wednesday February 22, 2012 Winnipeg Jets News Headlines

Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what’s going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets.

Here is what's in the news for Wednesday, February 22, 2012:

Recapping last night’s gut-wrenching loss to the Philadelphia Flyers: “If you could paint a picture of what it looks like to have your heart torn from your chest and be kicked in the private parts all at once, Ondrej Pavelec provided a decent portrait late Tuesday night.” [WFP]

Our SB Nation pals at Broad Street Hockey offer more from a Flyers perspective: “The Flyers absolutely dominated at five-on-five play all game long. Every line. Guys from Claude Giroux to Simmonds to Max Talbot to Reemer to .. well, basically every forward had phenomenal games, and this was going to be a cruel, cruel Tuesday night if the Flyers wound up losing. We’ve faced a lot of those lately, and thank Orange Jesus, this one was different.” [BSH]

Gary Lawless provides an apt projection regarding Winnipeg’s Trade Deadline plans: “Can Cheveldayoff peddle soon-to-be unrestricted free agents like Tanner Glass and Jim Slater for picks if the Jets are in the hunt? Normally the trading of key players such as these two would be a signal from the GM to the room that the boss has given up on the current season and has switched to planning for the future.” [WFP]

Winnipeg Jets prospect Mark Scheifele is still confident in his game dispite a drop off in his point production: “Right now I’m just not getting the bounces. I could have four or five points every night. I’m getting the chances so I’m not too worried about it. (Tight checking) is something you have to try to overcome. You have to be able to take those challenges and roll with it. I’ve taken it pretty good.” [Winnipeg Sun]

Congrats to former MJHL Winnipeg South Blue and Brown Bear Ryan Garbutt on scoring his first NHL goal last night. The Winnipeg native had spent parts of the last three years in the CHL, ECHL and AHL before his recent promotion to the Stars. Best of luck the rest of the season, Ryan. [Twitter, via Dallas Stars]

Finally, we couldn’t be happier for Nate Ewell who has been named College Hockey Inc’s new interim Executive Director. The Princeton and Michigan State grad will fill in for Paul Kelly who stepped down from the position on Monday night. We wish Nate all the best in his new role with College Hockey. [NHL.com]
