Not a lot of shots in the first period: 8-5 USA. The Swiss rolled Streit/Weber as the top D pairing, with Diaz/Blindenbacher as the second unit (and they were unfortunately on the ice for the goal against.) The other pairings were Sbisa/von Gunten and Furrer/Seger. Beyond that first pair, they seem to have some trouble getting the puck out of their own end.
Def. | TOI | +/- | PIMs | SOG |
Streit | 6:59 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
Weber | 6:48 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Diaz | 5:11 | -1 | 0 | 0 |
Sbisa | 5:08 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
Blindenbacher | 4:51 | -1 | 2 | 1 |
von Gunten | 4:13 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Furrer | 3:42 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Seger | 3:10 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Patrick Kane led all players with 7:26 TOI and three shots in the first period.
Update 1: that second goal by David Backes made Yannick Weber look pretty weak. Perhaps even the first Swiss pairing is going to have trouble with NHL players.
Update 2: Diaz dropped way down the depth chart in the 2nd period. Sbisa and Blindenbacher are the #2 pair now.
The Swiss are bad enough that the US has no use for playing defensively - Switzerland had just four shots in the second period.
Chris Drury has only five shifts through two periods.
Update 3: A bit of an ugly game. The Swiss have absolutely no offense - the assumption that Jonas Hiller can keep them in the game is suspect to say the least. It's hard to win a 0-0 game!
