It was a long, meandering trip through 95 years of NHL history, bringing together such great names as Leif Rohlin, Odie Cleghorn, Obs Heximer, not to mention numerous porn names like Jimmy Orlando and Brian Bonin. For all the fun I had, there could only be one, and it came down to the inspiring names of two courageous men, Zarley Zalapski and Peanuts O'Flaherty.

This is part 4 of a series of posts about Adjusted Plus-Minus (APM). Since I've been a slacker, its been a while since the last one. So as a reminder, in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, we gave an intro, discussed best offensive players, and discussed best defensive players (both at even strength). This post we'll talk about the best overall players in even strength situations according to Adjusted Plus-Minus. We've been using Goals (G), Shots (S), Fenwick (F), and Corsi (C), and I'm also going to start including Expected Goals (E) now, from the stuff I posted about here. I'll also briefly discuss ridge regression, which is the regression technique I'm now using. Now for the top 5 players at even strength according to APM....

The St. John's IceCaps got absolutely waxed tonight by the Norfolk Admirals by a score of 6-1. Zach Redmond had the only goal for the IceCaps. [AHL.com]

Press Box Musings: Were The Winnipeg Jets Considered "The Back-Up Plan" By Their Opposition?

I forget at what point in the season I noticed this, but one day I was checking Daily Faceoff (an excellent site by the way for fantasy hockey) to see which goalies were starting that evening, and the Jets were facing a teams back-up goalie that night. It then dawned on me that the Winnipeg Jets appeared to see a lot of back-up goalies throughout the season. Sure, the Jets faced Vezina finalists in Henrik Lundqvist and Pekka Rinne multiple times, and also tried to get the puck behind the likes of Carey Price, Martin Brodeur, Ryan Miller, Jimmy Howard, Miikka Kiprusoff and other #1 goalies. But it also seemed to me that we saw an awful lot of guys like Martin Biron, Brian Boucher, Tuukka Rask, Ray Emery, Richard Bachman, Scott Clemmensen and Cory Schneider. Heck, there was also a Rick DiPietro sighting this year.
So I thought I'd go back and look at the goalies that started each game this year (the number of starts they made are in the brackets). These are not games played, but instead are games started. I also made a note of the venue (Home or Away) as well as whether or not the Jets or the opposing team were in the midst of a back-to-back situation, and which game (first or second half) of the back-to-back it was. The results were very interesting to me, so figured I'd share them with you. Check out the chart after the jump.

Here is what's in the news for Thursday, May 17, 2012:
Winnipeg Jets' young gun Evander Kane managed scored a goal and team Canada lost. Overall, Kaner had a pretty good showing. He was tied for the team lead in goals and was 6th on the squad in TIO. It will be nice to see what he can do as a first line player in Winnipeg next year. Jets Captain Andrew Ladd was Canada's player of the game in the loss. [IIHF]
Speaking of Winnipeg, the folks at TSN put together an in depth Off-Season Game Plan for our team. They look at needs, cap numbers, prospects, draft projections and they even source behindthenet.ca. Good stuff! [TSN]
Speaking of prospects, Hockey's Future breaks down Jets' prospects and the impact of extended playoff runs on their development. I have been hearing some great things about Patrice Cormier. There is more and more talk about him being NHL ready. [HF]
The 2012 Young Stars Tournament has been cancelled. It was very excited to see that first glimpse of our Jets last year. Hopefully this is the only hockey that is cancelled next year. [Edmonton Journal]

Calder Cup brings out best (and worst) in IceCaps

Tonight the IceCaps will kick off their round three series against the extremely tough Admirals in Norfolk. After defeating the WBS Penguins in game seven this past Saturday, the team was given a few days off before perhaps the toughest test they'll face since, well, the last time they played Norfolk.
The Admirals are really something. Though they've managed to lose three games so far in these playoffs, they finished the regular season on a run that saw the team lose only 2 games since January. That's not a typo.

The Pilot's Logbook looks at the performances of regular Jets players over the course of 2011-12, primarily through time on-ice and Gabe's player performance charts.
Finally, we come to one of our TOI monsters in Andrew Ladd. Deployed in all situations, Ladd experienced a bit of regression from 2010-11's numbers (29 G, 30 A, 59 PTS), although considering it was his assist total that regressed it might have been the luck of his teammates that took a little downturn. That said, this edition of the logbook will give us a good look at what a full-minutes forward looks like...
Jets 1.0 / 2.0 Comparables: Dustin Byfuglien – Big Buff’s Big Year

While I drew the ire of a few readers by suggesting there was a link between the Jets of old and the Jets of new, I do intend to continue with the comparisons. Before I get rolling I would like to reiterate that this is not an attempt to claim ownership of the "official records" that rest in Phoenix. This is simply number munching from another perspective. The intention here is to provide a statistical record that allows easy comparisons between the players that people saw 15+ years ago and what they are seeing now.
This is about Winnipeg hockey history and offering a more info to the fans; it isn’t any bigger than that.
Today we take a look at Dustin Byfuglien and how his 2011-12 production compares to Jets players of the past. I am also going to include all-time Atl / Jets 2.0 tables for comparison sake, hopefully this ensures that nobody yells at me.
