line-height: normal; background-color: #f8f4f8;">
Pretty clear that power play shooting percentage cannot predict future power play shooting percentage across seasons.

So why does this happen?

Well first thought may be that roster turnover affects this data. There may be some truth to that, but I would argue that the players that play on the power play (the core of any team) are pretty constant from year to year. You don't see teams letting go or trading power play forwards or defenseman as much as third line and fourth line players.

What I believe is that shooting percentage is just very random from year to year, similar to even strength shooting percentage.

Regardless, power play shooting percentage clearly is not repeatable and seems to be far more influenced by luck than anything else. As a result, teams should not focus on power play shooting percentage when looking at their success on the power play and instead should focus on other metrics than can be proved to be repeatable.

Much research has been done to show how even strength shooting percentage is ridiculously random, on both the individual and team level. As a result, shooting percentage cannot be used to predict future success, whether in the same season or in different seasons.

Corsi per goal, the cousin of shooting percentage

I've never seen this before, so I wanted to share this. I was thinking about shooting percentage, and realized that it completely ignores when a player takes a shot and it misses the net or it gets blocked.

Thus, I propose that Corsi per goal (at both the team and individual level) is far more usefull, since it penalizes teams and/or players that miss the net or get their shots blocked at a high rate.

I'm planning on using this stat and seeing if it reveals anything interesting.

Shot blocking percentages for/against and their correlation to winning

Most people in the advanced hockey metrics community are aware that Blocked shots correlate slightly negatively to winning (in other words, teams with a lot of blocked shots will usually have less wins and a worse goal differential than teams with smaller blocked shot totals). This is because a blocked shot for team A actually shows us that Team A didn't have the puck.

I wanted to do this to determine which teams blocked more shots per shot attempt, which teams got more of their shots blocked per shot attempt, and whether that correlated at all to winning and or scoring goals.

Calculating the percentage of shots a team blocks (compared to their total shot attempts total) or the percentage shots a team took that got blocked is very easy. NOTE: all numbers are courtesy of stats.hockeyanalysis.com and are at even strength (5v5) and not including any situations with the goaltender pulled.

Remember, this stat shows the rate at which a team's shots get blocked by the opposing team.

Let the post-mortem analyses begin

The corpse is still a little warm, lets start poking at it. Please add your insightful, witty, or absolutely wrong ideas in the comments field below.

I'll start and I'll be brief:

this is not news. Lack of depth hurts. We have 3 first line players. Two of them play on the first line. The other is stuck on the second line with a guy who should have retired, and another guy who was plucked from waivers. Our D looks good on paper, but on the ice it looks as organized as a Walmart on Boxing Day (or Black Thursday for you Americans).

Everyone blames the goaltending. Sure Pavs let in some softies. But he also made some miraculous saves to keep them in it. I am not sure if he plays better sober or drunk. Someone better find out and adjust his diet accordingly. In either case, you can't hang the season on him. Not when his team's best D-man played in so few contests.

The GM. You let Jussi Jokinen slip away. You actually took the effort to sign paperwork to bring in Santorelli instead. and Wright. And Miettinen. And a bunch of other guys who showed why they were cast-offs when they arrived. They're not good enough for this league. And none are of an age where they can be expected to get any better. You signed Pavs to a bigger deal than logic dictated he deserved. You are building for the future but neglecting to see that you'll likely be fired before you get to see that youth movement meet it's potential. Build for the future, but look out for the "now". Wheeler, Ladd and Kane are in their prime or rapidly approaching it. If this is not what you're building for then trade them all away now. Get younger talent and first round picks for Ladd and Kane. Otherwise start building around them now. I'm tired of watching Kane skate by himself. it's amazing he scores as much as he does without capable linemates.

OK i'm done.

Claude Noel: What do the players honestly think of him?

I admire Claude Noel for his frankness. His honesty. The guy is tight-lipped like Tiger Woods is a virgin.

If a player sucks, he says that player sucks. If the powerplay or penalty killing suck, he says they suck. If Ondrej Pavelec is a sieve, he says he's a sieve. We always know where the Winnipeg Jets head coach stands on his players and his team. Hell, we even know where he stands on the media. The whole hockey world knows. He's the best sound byte in the National Hockey League.

That's why news scavengers like him. It's why shinny scribes in River City didn't give him the finger earlier this week when he gave them the finger about dumb questions. You don't zip the lips that fill your notebook.

Yet, in the wake of another season that will not include Stanley Cup tournament games being played in the Little Hockey House on the Prairie, I find myself in ponder: Where do the Winnipeg players stand on Coach Claude?

Do they think he's a hoot, like the boys and girls on TSN do?

Do they show up at the rink the morning after yet another public flogging on Sports Centre and say, "Whoooo, boy! Wasn't that great the way Coach Claude chewed out our asses last night on TV?"

Of course not.

So, do I want to play for a man who hangs me out to dry scant seconds after I've received a fatal playoff blow in a loss to the Washington Capitals? Do I really need to hear that I'm not as good a player as Alex Ovechkin? Well, duh. What was your first clue, coach? His 30 goals or my three goals?

Now, I realize there's little likelihood of a player stepping forward to trash mouth Coach Claude. As sure as there'll be sand bagging on the banks of the Red River this spring, that would earn you a one-way ticket out of town and a bad rep. So, assuming neither of those things are on your wish list, you scratch 'crapping on the coach' off your things-to-do list and button your lip.

But, oh my, would I like to get inside the players' heads. You know, get them on truth syrum (or beer; whichever of the two is handy) and feret out the real dope.

What does Evander Kane think? Alex Burmistrov? Pavelec? Dustin Byfuglien?

I realize that players don't need to be on buddy terms with their head coach. The powerful Montreal Canadiens outfits of the mid-to-late 1970s were evidence of that. They surely did not have the warm-and-fuzzies for Scotty Bowman, but they put up with his brusk ways because he was a coaching genius who knew how to win which, in turn, put more playoff bonus money into their pockets at a time when players weren't paid a gazzilion dollars to sit on the bench and twindle their thumbs.

Coach Claude, on the other hand, is not a coaching genius, even though I sometimes get the vibe that he believes he invented the puck, the bluelines and the pre-game meal. Like he's the only person who's figured out this thing we call hockey. Well, he isn't. And his methods have not translated into playoff bonus money for the Winnipeg players in the two seasons he has pushed their buttons.

And I'm left to wonder if, or when, his act will have worn thin with the workers. It can't be tough love all the time, but that's what it's been with this man from the get-go.

I still recall this memorable quote from early last season: "Why are you, an NHL player, playing like an American league player? And it’s not one or two, it’s more than that."

That's not motivation. It's insulting. And that's how he began his tenure.

Earlier this season, it was: "Where do we stand at the quarter pole? I don’t like the way we play. So does that answer your question? I don’t like the way we play. I just don’t think we play hard enough."

And, of course, this week he had to provide his players with a public reminder that they aren't as skilled as the Capitals.

If the Jets move forward with Coach Claude behind the bench—and there's nothing to suggest his ouster is imminent—let's hope he remains glib, witty and colorful with the media. No one wants to stifle that. But, at the same time, let there be the proviso that there are to be no more public hangings of his players. I think that act has worn thin...I can only wonder if his players do, too.

I admire Claude Noel for his frankness. His honesty. The guy is tight-lipped like Tiger Woods is a virgin.

Claude Noel is off-key in singing his hurtin' song

I watched a Claude Noel media scrum the other night and John Tortorella broke out.

Oh, yes, Coach Claude went all Torts. He was not a joyous Noel after his Winnipeg Jets had been beaten by the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, a loss that placed the Jets on the hope-and-a-prayer life support system. He came across as a graduate of the Torts School of Media Relations, that's what he did, and it wasn't a pretty sight. I swear, I thought our boy Claude was actually going to start crying after one poor sap asked the "dumbest question in the world." For the second year in a row, no less.

Instead of weeping, though, he began singing a hurtin' song after fielding what I must presume was the second dumbest question in the world.

"If you can't come up with somethin' better than that, you're hurtin'. I'm hurtin'," he said, then took his puck and went home.

Yup, there sure was a whole lotta hurtin' going on. And, of course, there'll be a whole lot more hurtin' if the Jets are not up to the task tonight against les Habitants from Montreal. Lose and it's a done deal. No playoffs. Again. The Jets will be oh-fer-2 since setting up shop in their Little Hockey House on the Prairie in downtown Pegtown.

And then there'll be a whole lot more of the world's dumbest questions for Coach Claude to bark about.

Someone might ask him why his 29th-ranked powerplay sucks. They might ask him why his 22nd-ranked penalty-killing unit sucks. Someone might ask him why he's still giving Dustin Byfuglien more than 26 minutes of ice time when it's apparent that Big Buff has been running on fumes for about a month. Someone might ask him if Big Buff is going to be a minus player the rest of his life. Someone might ask him why his No. 1 goaltender, Ondrej Pavelec, is actually a No. 33 and No. 37 goaltender in the significant categories of save percentage and goals-against average, respectively.

It will be Dumb and Dumber, the sequel.

Look, nobody has to tell me the media is an ass, because I used to be one of those asses. I do, however, think that perhaps Coach Claude might want to consider the notion that his hockey club has the friendliest media since Ed Dearden was the Jets beat reporter in their World Hockey Association days.

Most of you probably don't recall the scribblings of Ed Dearden. Let's just say he wrote nary a discouraging word about his hockey heroes. He was what you call "a homer." So much so that he once offered to pick up "some clean socks and underwear" for the Jets' coach of the day, Bobby Kromm. I swear, it's true.

For reasons I cannot recall, Eddie stayed home in River City when the Jets embarked on a lengthy road trip (the junkets were always lengthy in the WHA) and he was to join them in progress. In the interim, he handled his interviews via telephone and put in a call to Kromm the day before he was to join the club somewhere in the U.S. I was sitting at the desk next to him in the Winnipeg Tribune sports department, listening to his "dumb" questions, when he blurted out the most gobsmacking remark and I heard in my 30 years as a jock-sniffer:

"I'll see ya, tomorrow, Krommie. Say, would you like me to stop by your house on the way to the airport and pick you up some clean socks and underwear?"

Offering to pick up the coach's clean gitch...now that's a friendly media.

I would venture to suggest none of the boys and/or girls who track the Jets as they make their way through this National Hockey League season are quite that chummy with Coach Claude. I'm quite certain he's got the laundry issue well in hand.

But he does have a very friendly media.

Quite frankly, I rather enjoy the majority of Coach Claude's to-and-fro sessions with news scavengers, because he's as blunt as a wrecking ball. That's refreshing. But when he turns Torts on them? Not so much.

Yo! Coach Claude! This isn't exactly a news bulletin, but reporters often ask dumb questions. It's in their DNA. So, you want better/different questions? Then what say you do something better/different? Like make the playoffs.

Offering to pick up the coach's clean gitch...now that's a friendly media.

And the Jets' magic number is...54!

Let's begin by crunching some numbers, class (even though I hate crunching numbers; I was horrible at math as a kid). At present, the Winnipeg Jets are trying to chase down four outfits—Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, New York Rangers. If each of those teams plays .500 the rest of the way, they will finish with 54, 55, 53 and 53 points, respectively. Therefore, the likely magic number for les Jets to join the Stanley Cup tournament is 54. That would require a 5-1 finish. Doable? Absolutely. Likelihood? Cross your fingers...A best-case scenario for the Winnipegs: One of the two New York teams tank and win only two times. Then the Jets' magic number would be 52, or a 4-2 final push. So, the local heroes have only one way of assessing their lot in life: They have to run the table...

At Little Bit of This: I don't know about you, but I look at the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Jets and I see one glaring difference: The coaching. I don't believe for a nanosecond that the Leafs have superior overall talent than the Jets. But I do believe Randy Carlyle demands more out of his people and holds them more accountable than does Claude Noel with the Jets. Every time I've watched the Leafs this season, they've played as if their jobs are in jeopardy. All of them. Carlyle squeezes every ounce of juice out of his Leafs, while there have been too many nights when that hasn't been the case with Team Winnipeg. I say Carlyle should be coach of the year for turning water into Molson Canadian, and Noel should pop some nasty pills. What the Jets truly need is someone like Alex Ovechkin or Steven Stamkos in the lineup. You know, a game-change. Yes, I realize every team needs a game-changer like Ovie and Stamkos, but we're talking about the Jets here, OK? And I'm thinking Evander Kane can be that person. But will he be that person in the next half dozen games?...I watched Don Cherry in his Bully Pulpit on Saturday night and I had to check my calendar to see if it's 2013 or if we're still living in the 1970s/80s. I mean, he went off on one of his us-vs.-them rants (Euros/Russians vs. good Canadian boys) and, of course, the information he produced made it abundantly clear that we're better than them. "Don’t ever forget kids, it’s our game. We’re the best," is how he closed his sermon. Fine. We're the best. The problem I have with that dog-eared discussion is this: Didn't the us-vs.-them debate end last century? Does anyone other than the Lord of Loud talk about it anymore? Come on, Grapes! I think you're terrific. But, hey, can't we just agree that there are great Euro/Russian players and there are great Canadian players. Move on to the next topic, man...How good a season was Sidney Crosby having before his trip to the dentist? Well, he's still leading the National Hockey League in scoring...The Edmonton Oilers will not qualify for the Stanley Cup tournament. Again. They might get the No. 1 pick in the NHL's annual garage sale of the premium 18-year-olds this summer. Again. So when does somebody decide that the Kevin Lowe-Steve Tambellini tandem is a failure and show them the door?

A Little Bit of That: Hands up anyone who'd like to see Montreal-Toronto playoff series. If you're from my era (I'm so old only carbon dating can determine my age), there's nothing you'd like to see more...Fashion note: It's about that girl on the Hockey Night in Canada studio crew, Andi Petrillo. Who chooses her outfits? Don Cherry? I swear, looking at either of them is more hazardous than staring at a solar eclipse...Why do I get the feeling we haven't heard the last of Roberto Luongo as a major factor with the Canucks? Something tells me the world's highest-paid caddy will have a large say in Vancouver's fate before the dust settles this season...In pre-season prognostications, I picked the Jets to finish ninth. That's where they stand today. Mind you, I also picked the Leafs to finish 13th in the Eastern Conference and les Canadiens to be riding in the caboose. Yup, said they'd be dead last. So, when it comes to my predictions, proceed with caution if they influence you at the betting window...Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province suggests the Canucks should shut down the Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik, for a a game or two so they can relax and recharge prior to the grind that is the Stanley Cup tournament. I say why not? I mean, I watched them lose 4-3 to the Avalanche on Saturday and, believe me, all the other Canucks took the day off...Which saga ends first? Luongo or the Coyotes? My money is on Luongo leaving Vancouver before the 'Yotes pack their bags. But only because Gary Bettman has no say in what happens to Luongo...Once upon a time, Alberta was a hockey powerhouse. Now the two teams there play meaningless games in April...Interesting stat: In Toronto's 5-1 lashing of les Canadiens on Saturday night, the Leafs laid 47 hits on the Habs. Only one Toronto player failed to bump into a Canadien—Phil Kessel. Why does that not surprise you? But, hey, he isn't paid to get his jersey wrinkled...Is P.K. Subban one of those guys you hate if he's one of the other guys but a darling if he's on your side? I think he is...Just found out that Jets' deep-thinker Claude Noel was born on Halloween. Perhaps that explains why his team is trick one night and treat the next.

At the Buzzer: This from my favorite (not!) sports scribe, Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: "With each win the Jets increase their probability of reaching the post-season." Really? What was your first clue, Sherlock?

But, hey, he isn't paid to get his jersey wrinkled...Is P.K. Subban one of those guys you hate if he's one of the other guys but a darling if he's on your side? I think he is...Just found out that Jets' deep-thinker Claude Noel was born on Halloween. Perhaps that explains why his team is trick one night and treat the next.

At the Buzzer: This from my favorite (not!) sports scribe, Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: "With each win the Jets increase their probability of reaching the post-season." Really? What was your first clue, Sherlock?

Are the alpha male, frat boy caves and fans ready to welcome a gay NHL player?

Once upon another lifetime, I sniffed jocks for a living.

Yes, I agree, that sounds rather disgusting, but you shouldn't take it in the literal sense. A jock-sniffer, you see, is someone who writes/talks about the goings-on of professional athletes and their teams, which I did for 30 years as a sports scribe with various publications, both newspaper and magazine.

I went into their changing rooms (a nasty bit of business, that). I rode on their buses. I flew on their airplanes (got caught at the L.A. airport with the Winnipeg Jets when an earthquake shook the City of Angels in the late 1980s). I sometimes broke bread or had pints with them.

So, I know a bit about pro athletes and what does or doesn't make their engines purr.

And let me tell you this: If I had $100 for every time I heard a hockey player use the word "fag" or "faggot", I could afford a shack on Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg and have enough cash left over for Jets seasons tickets.

Hockey players toss those words around like confetti at a wedding. Seriously, the locker rooms I entered were gay friendly like Tiger Woods is a virgin. They were man caves. Macho, alpha male, frat boy man caves.

I bring this to your attention today because the National Hockey League/NHL Players Association have climbed into bed with the You Can Play Project, a laudable initiative that seeks to ensure equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation. It is a most admirable cause that crusades to stamp out homophobia in hockey and challenges the macho culture of locker rooms and among the patrons who frequent the 30 NHL rinks.

The front man behind You Can Play is Patrick Burke, a Philadelphia Flyers scout who was anointed Man of the Year for 2012 by Xtra.

Be advised that Xtra is a gay publication. It speaks to all things LGBT. Yet this gay publication bestowed its highest salute on Burke. A hockey guy. A straight hockey guy, to the best of my knowledge.

Think about that for a moment. Chew on it. Although there is nothing remotely gay about the NHL, Xtra selected a scout with the Philadelphia Flyers as the leading light in the LGBT community's ongoing quest for equality. And now we have the NHL/NHLPA linking arms and walking in lockstep toward the day an openly gay man feels comfortable enough in his own skin to step out of the closet and say, "Here I am, world! Deal with it!"

Is it important that a gay NHL player—or one in any of the other three major professionals sports leagues in North America—comes out while he is active? Well, it's important to the gay community and it should be important to society. It will represent the breaking down of the last bastion. Our Berlin Wall, if you will. There are openly gay politicians, doctors, lawyers, teachers, singers/songwriters, actors, writers, artists, clergy, tennis players, golfers, boxers, etc. But there's not one gay man in any of the NHL, National Football League, Major League Baseball or National Basketball Association? That, my friends, is logic defying.

Of course there are, and have been, gay men active in those enterprises. They just stay hidden until their playing days are in the rear view mirror. But why?

Because of the macho, alpha male, frat boy man caves. And the intolerant and bigoted who sit in the pews, that's why.

I remember all those man caves I entered over a 30-year time frame. I remember the lewd, crude comments about women. About gays. I remember conducting an interview with a naked Tiger Williams pawing at his balls while I dutifully jotted down his bons mots after a Vancouver Canucks' playoff game (talk about disgusting working conditions). And how often have you heard some lout on a bar stool refer to Daniel and Henrik as "the Sedin sisters?" Too often, I'm afraid.

"It's impossible to really overstate how difficult it might be for an individual athlete to have the courage to come out," Burke told the Los Angeles Times last December. "The challenges and the fears are justified. They're real."

Fear is the operative word and only a gay, lesbian or transgender person knows that fear. No one else can even comprehend that fear, because you must be it and live it to be on speaking terms with it. That fear of being 'outed' or coming out is a formidable foe.

Fear is the singular reason why the 'gay Jackie Robinson' remains rooted in the closet. He fears the character crucifixion. He fears the condemnation, ridicule and mockery. He fears the physical attacks and the emotional pummeling. He fears the death threats that surely would arrive. He fears the ostracism. He fears a media that will dig up every morsel of dirt it can discover about his life. He fears he doesn't have the strength to survive. He fears loss of friends and family. He fears coming out would be a career-closing decision, like it was for Glenn Burke of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics.

Fear is a formidable foe. It can be paralyzing. Any gay, lesbian or transgender person can tell you that.

The thing is, any active-yet-closeted gay athlete isn't fooling his teammates. Although there's an unfortunate tendency to color pro athletes as scholarly challenged, they aren't stupid. They know when they have a gay teammate. Keep in mind that these people live in close-knit, gated communities. They are loath to let outsiders in on their secrets. But they know. All one need do is read Out: The Glenn Burke Story or watch the documentary of the same name for confirmation.

"The players had no problem with it. They loved him as a person despite his sexual orientation. He was a part of the team. They were upset, sad, pissed off when he was traded. That was the beginning of the end of his career. And that’s where his downward spiral began," Out producer Doug Harris says of Burke.

That was during the 1970s, and we can only wonder how much has changed in the alpha man caves. Or in the stands.

The NHL/NHLPA-You Can Play union suggests the landscape has shifted considerably since the days when Oakland's bigoted manager Billy Martin branded Burke a "faggot" in front of his teammates.

So good on the NHL/NHLPA.

Once upon another lifetime, I sniffed jocks for a living.

April Fools day hockey style

anybody have any good April Fools day stories related to hockey?

a few years ago I was driving to work and as usual, sports radio was on to mute the pain of sitting in gridlock here in rainy VanHoover (like the vacuum cleaner, it sucks.)

The interviewers had Pavel Bure on the phone. He was talking about staying in shape, skating three times a week and talking with the GM about making a come back with the Canucks in time for a playoff run. The way the hosts had set it up, the Canucks had somehow put Bure on their negotiation list after he'd retired. And Bure was free and clear to join the team if an agreement was in place. And it was the real Bure on the radio, talking about how excited he was to lace em up and contributing on the powerplay. A surprising number of people fell for it.

The real joke was that Mat Sundin had earlier come out of "retirement" and was on the Canucks roster that season.

anything else come to mind?

When experiencing a scoring slump, you’re likely to start gripping your stick a little tighter

Being too defensive means you’ll rarely score – and if you do, it’ll likely be an ugly one.

Euros with their long hair, flashy style and accents get all the attention.

Backchecking may seem like fruitless hard work but it will pay off in the end.

Getting a facewash is disgusting, especially after you’ve scored.

If you can dangle, you’ll score more often than not.

Two minutes in the box can feel like an eternity.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you bang away at it, you’re still going to get stopped by the big pad.

Winnipeg Jets 2013-14: Looking at next year

This is much later than I promised, but I've finally put it together for you all!

We're just over half way through the season and have an idea of how this team fits together. Long story short, while there are a lot of bright spots, much of our roster leaves a lot to be desired. Our bottom 6 is not providing any complimentary offence outside of Wellwood and Antropov. If I were in charge of the Winnipeg Jets this offseason, my main priorities would be as follows, in order:

Resign key players and add other players through trade/FA. Specifics include:

- Beef up the bottom 6.

- Find a bonafide #3/4 D-Man to play with Zach Bogosian.

- If the price is right, find a #1C (unlikely).

Find a #1 goalie or someone at least somewhat better than Ondrej Pavelec.

We'll start with the resigning of key players. The following players are coming off the books and/or need new contracts. My thoughts as to what we should do are listed next to the players.

FORWARDS

Nik Antropov - No thanks.
Blake Wheeler - Duh. $4,750,000 annual cap hit, 3-4 year term.
Bryan Little - Duh. $3,500,000 annual cap hit, 2 year term.
Kyle Wellwood - Yes please. $1,600,000, 1 year term. Same as now.
Alexander Burmistrov - Duh. $2,000,000 annual cap hit, 2 year term.
Antti Miettinen - No thanks.
Eric Tangradi - Maybe on a two-way deal. $726,000 for a 1 year, two-way deal.
Anthony Peluso - Only if we dump Thorburn. $650,000 for a 1 year, two-way deal.

To fill the rest of the roster, I propose the following:

Call up Mark Scheifele and Carl Klingberg/Ivan Telegin/whoever impresses most in camp to fill the 3rd line. They surely can provide more offense than what we have now, too.

Trade Jim Slater for whatever we can get for him; most likely a late round pick. There may be some teams we can convince to take him, as defensive centres that regularly kill penalties and win faceoffs are highly valued. Zenon Konopka doesn't kill penalties, sucks at fighting but is good at faceoffs and found a job with the Minnesota Wild. Replace him with Patrice Cormier.

Sign Boyd Gordon to take a spot on the 4th line. He has a good history of not getting slaughtered when going against toughs in a defensive role and is also a centre; he could be a good mentor for Cormier as well.

Send Tangradi down; he shows flashes of skill but has far too many games where he generates zero offence and gets shelled.

Buy out Chris Thorburn or bury him in the AHL if we can only use one buyout per year. No need to waste a roster spot with someone who can barely play.

If we’re going hard after a #1C, my choice would be Alex Steen. Asides from the fact that he’s Thomas Steen’s son, he drives play extremely well against tough competition. He’s 29 years old meaning he the odds are against him as far as being productive in the long term goes, but his skill set is well suited for an aging, defensively aware centre. It would take a lot to pry him away from STL. The deal would probably have to centre (haha) around either Little or Alex Burmistrov. Another obstacle is that we are moving in to the same division as the St. Louis Blues.

My preference would be to deal Little and a pick. I'm terrible at creating hypothetical trade scenarios, but Little is a good defensive centre; not as good offensively as Steen, but he is younger so I thought that a pick (2nd or 3rd rounder maybe?) would be enough to get the deal done if the Blues were interested. I doubt this would happen (hence why Little is still in my lineup) but I’ve included it anyways because it would be awesome.

After my changes:

Ladd – Little – Wheeler

Kane – Joker – Burmi

Klingberg/Telegin – Scheifele – Wellwood

Wright – Cormier – Gordon

Peluso

DEFENSE

Ron Hainsey - No thanks.
Zach Bogosian - Duh. $4,500,000 cap hit, 3 year term.
Gran Clitsome - No thanks.
Zach Redmond - Duh. $1,200,000 cap hit, 2 year deal.
Derek Meech - Two-way, keep him in STJ. $726,000 cap hit for a 2 year, two-way deal.
Paul Postma - Why not? $1,200,000 cap hit, 2 year deal.

Strongly pursue Ladislav Smid. He's playing on one of the worst teams in the league and is approaching UFA status and quality UFAs don't usually sign with teams who stink. He would fit well with Bogo and would give us one of the best D corps in the league.

After my changes:

Toby – Buff

Smid – Bogo

Redmond – Postma

Stuart

This is about it for the skaters; overall a stronger group than what we have now.

GOALTENDING

Sign Niklas Backstrom; with the cap coming down and the Parise/Suter/Koivu/Heatley contracts seriously limiting their cap space, he won't be back in MIN.

Buy out Pavelec; this is subject to change if, against the odds, he really has turned a corner lately and we're seeing the quality netminder everyone thinks he can be. I doubt it and as such have bought him out.

Extend Al Montoya's contract; he has looked good as our backup and he deserves another shot with the team. $601,000 cap hit, 1 year deal.

Altogether, here is what my 2013-2014 incarnation of the Jets would look like.

FORWARDS
Andrew Ladd ($4.400m) / Bryan Little ($3.500m) / Blake Wheeler ($4.750m)
Evander Kane ($5.250m) / Olli Jokinen ($4.500m) / Alexander Burmistrov ($2.000m)
Carl Klingberg ($0.870m) / Mark Scheifele ($1.594m) / Kyle Wellwood ($1.600m)
James Wright ($0.650m) / Patrice Cormier ($0.875m) / Boyd Gordon ($1.325m)
Anthony Peluso ($0.666m)

DEFENSEMEN
Tobias Enstrom ($5.750m) / Dustin Byfuglien ($5.200m)
Ladislav Smid ($3.150m) / Zach Bogosian ($4.500m)
Paul Postma ($1.200m) / Zach Redmond ($1.200m)
Mark Stuart ($1.700m)

GOALTENDERS
Niklas Backstrom ($4.750m)
Al Montoya ($0.601m)

BUYOUTS
Buyout: Chris Thorburn ($0.000m)
Buyout: Ondrej Pavelec ($0.000m)

Note: Removed the totals as they were incorrect. Will re-add later.

So, what does everyone think? Like it? Hate it? Lets discuss!

WHO ARE THE UNTOUCHABLES?

In my view they are: Kane, Ladd, Bogosian, Buff, Trouba. All others including Sheifele (sp)are on the market for the right price. I shudder everytime I watch Coutourier and Hamilton play.:( We must show improvement, however slight each and every year to keep the fan base we currently enjoy. Depending where we finish i would even be prepared to try and trade up in this draft to get a shot at a top three pick. McKinnon being my first choice as a potential #1 center, then Jones, Drouin or that big Russian kid who looked like a potential Malkin type. I admit however, that Russian drafts do make me nervous.

I was wrong.... and I was right

Are we halfway thru this condensed season yet? No matter. Time to re-evaluate my pre-season expectations and see that I was definitely wrong... But I was also definitely right.

Wrong: Evander Kane's Vodka hangover didn't last the entire season. After about 5 games he's started to look like the Kane we saw last season. His first period vs Washington was a great example of him using speed, a quick wrist shot, and some tenacious work to get to the puck first. Hope he keeps a good attitude and stays with the Jets despite the media's attempts to run him out of town.

Right: after a week, Jokinen looked OK. Then everyone else's conditioning started kicking in and Olli is looking like an even slower version of Nik Antropov (if that was possible). Joker is saying the right things, and it looks like he's trying out there - even attempting a few body checks on the 3rd line. But.... wait a minute... did I say he was on the 3rd line?? There you go. Bad signing and I said so from day 1. Olli's best years were in Floria about ten years ago.

Wrong: Ondrej the Giant looked like a decent goalie to me last season, troubled by a defense prone to giving away "free pizzas". He stopped a lot of those point blank chances. When he signed his contract I thought, that's not too bad for an above average goalie, with a future in this league. Well, his lack of a glove hand seems to be highlighted and circled in red on every team's advance scouting report. Guess he may not be above average after all. Hope he finds a soft landing spot in the KHL.

Right: Andrew Ladd is an awesome captain. I saw him play a physical, tough serious against the Canucks when he was a member of the Blackhawks and thought to myself, here's a heart and soul guy who'd be great as a leader on a young team.

Wrong: I thought the Jets best all-around defenseman was injury prone because he's the size of a Hobbit in a league full of Uruk-hai. Turns out I was wrong. The league is full of Giant Trolls. Poor Toby's going to have his clavicle crushed to dust before next season is up.

Right: The Jets will win the Southeast Division this year because every starting goalie in the division will suffer some season ending injury. I'm pretty sure I posted that right here in January. Didn't I? Yeah I'm pretty sure I did...

Florida"s Viability in the NHL

Good Morning All! Well, I have been keeping myself up to date with the Coyotes ownership situation, and it doesn't look like theres gonna be a silver lining anytime soon. But forget about that, I want to rant about Florida. As a diehard season ticket holder to the Thrashers (Sec. 312, Row G, Seat 9-10) I was pretty crushed that they made the move to Winnipeg but all is forgiven. I am happy that they now have a rowdy and passionate fan base, and I get to go to my first ever Jets game Sat, April 20 vs the Isles!!! So stoked, but I digress...

I was combing on Stubhub this morning to look at Panthers prices, and I could purchase a ticket for $2.55 in sec.422 row 9. Front Row glass seats for $125. Tickets to see the Jets-Lightning are a little more expensive, starting at $19. When the Jets return to play the panthers on Friday, tickets start at $3.00. I could watch the Jets play 3 times, pay for parking, beer, and hotdogs for less than 1 ticket to see the Jets play at Winnipeg, if your lucky to grab a ticket.

My question then: How does the NHL let this "fly under the radar" so to speak? Is this a known problem league wide? And if tickets are so dirt cheap, how come they are playing in less than half empty arenas? Is it not the goal to get struggling teams off revenue sharing and to become financially viable? I get that Bettman doesn't want his Sun-Belt expansion to be seen as a failure, but I think he should cut his losses now and move these teams. Personally I don't care where, be it more Canadian teams or more US teams. So I guess my real question is, with the vote on realignment coming soon, and seeing how FL and Tampa are grouped with NorthWest teams, is that a signal that change is imminent? and is Bettman willing to piss off the Snowbirds who live in FL in the winter in order to please diehards in Quebec City or perhaps Hamilton?

Thanks and GO JETS GO
