Trades and the Expansion Draft

The Winnipeg Jets are in great shape heading into the off-season in the land of the salary cap. Unlike previous off-seasons this one poses a unique opportunity for the Jets. As mentioned yesterday, there are some teams looking at moving a good player that they are unable to protect in the expansion draft. The Jets on the other hand have space to trade for a good player and still protect them. This means that the Jets can use some assets and acquire players that they can protect in the expansion draft for less than that same player might cost on a regular trade market.

The Jets can and should look into acquiring players that other teams need to trade lest they risk losing them to Las Vegas with no compensation. In the end, the Jets can probably gain a lot of talent before the expansion draft if they want to. Teams can make trades right now if they find the right fit, so anything could happen.

Should the Jets see which players are available to be traded for before the expansion draft?

The NHL Las Vegas Expansion Draft is on June 21, 2017.
