The First period had plenty of back to back action with the Jets having a few prime chances to score. But like so many times so far this season, they were unable to convert. Unfortunately, the injury bug still hasn’t left the Jets dressing room. While pursuing the puck behind the next, Shawn Matthias‘ left skate got caught in a rut in the ice and his knee bent in an extremely angle. He was helped off the ice and was not putting much weight on his injured leg. He did not return. I won’t be surprised if Matthias is out for quite some time. Late in the period the Capitals scored to make it 1-0. Karl Alzner was credited with the goal.
The second period was much of the same. Nikolaj Ehlers had a great chance and was unable to score, but did draw a slashing penalty. Marcus Johansson scored on a one timer right in front of the net to put the Caps up by two. After that, it seemed as if the Jets had a bit of pep in their step, desperate to try and finally get on the board. A wild scramble in front of the net was the closest they got in the second period.
Blake Wheeler was hauled down and the Jets were given their fourth power play of the game. 38 seconds into it, Tobias Enstrom was called for a tripping penalty. Finally, Mark Scheifele buried his own rebound. As the clock counted down the period, with 2:25 left Joel Armia (!!!!) made a sweet play and passed it to Adam Lowry (!!!!!!!!) who then scored (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to tie it up(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
…And then the Jets turned back into a pumpkin. With a mere thirty seconds left, off the face off in the Jets zone, Jay Beagle scored and that was the end of that. Despite how well the Jets played tonight, they still were unable to walk away with even a single point. Adam Lowry went from the hero to the goat in a flash.
The Jets will be in Washington on Thursday.
