Saturday MegaThread: SoCal Showdown

Justin K. Aller

Due to the 11:30 am start time today, here are your scores from last night, today's line up, and some notes on P.K. Subban and racism.

Recap:

Pittsburgh Penguins 2 New York Rangers 4 (OT)

NYR jumped out to the dreaded 2-0 lead only to blow it and then score twice in the same shift for the win. NYR leads the series 1-0.

This game was all MIN but on the score board. After the Hawks jumped out to the dreaded two goal lead they stopped playing and never really did return to playing except for Patrick Kane scoring goals. CHI leads the series 1-0.

Subban:

P.K. Subban is a very talented player who happens to be black. Sometimes these two things cause him unneeded problems because he scores game-winning goals and makes fans angry. He can't change who he is or the colour of his skin. He can't change what racist people say about him. There are a lot of hockey fans who aren't racist and who swiftly condemned the behaviour of their fellow fans, but this type of behaviour has emerged as a pattern. A black player scores the winning goal in overtime and racists feel the need to share their thoughts about that player with the world. It is terrible, but also inevitable that some people still think this way. Some people are terribly backwards people and think like this. There is little that can be done to stop them; so instead of retweeting them or telling them off over Twitter, just report them and move on. Also remember that the real victims are the players like P.K. Subban and Joel Ward who get hate spewed at them for the colour of their skin.

There were a few really good comments on this latest incident from players, coaches, organizations, and fans alike as well as some insightful articles that include looking back at Subban in junior and what he went through to get to the NHL.

Sean Fitz-Gerald visits with Belleville Bulls G.M. George Burnett and Burnett thinks that Subban has heard it all before.

Chris Johnston reminds us of Boston's checkered past, but highlights how the Bruins are firmly on Subban's side here.

Kevin Weekes joins Tim and Sid and he condemns people for racist thoughts. The whole piece is worth a listen as Weekes challenges Tim and Sid on why people think a certain way. Weekes has lived this and articulates what he has experienced and what he is seeing very well.

Stanley Cup of Chowder offers a great statement about the racist comments.

The Boston Bruins don't agree with their racist fans, and distance themselves from the behaviour.

Players and coaches from both teams also spoke out against the racist comments.
