Winnipeg Jets' centre Mark Scheifele injured likely out 6-8 weeks

Potential Calder Award candidate Mark Scheifele could be out for awhile after suffering a knee-on-knee collision.

After receiving a hit that has spurred much debate amongst Winnipeg Jets' fans, Mark Scheifele will be reevaluated tomorrow as he left tonight's game against the New York Islanders with an apparent knee injury.

Mitch Peacock of CBC Sports has confirmed that Scheifele's lower-body injury will be evaluated by the Jets' medical staff tomorrow in order to determine its severity.

Scheifele collided knee-on-knee with New York Islanders defenceman Calvin de Haan midway through the second period. The Jets' rookie left the game and did not return while de Haan was levied a two minute penalty for tripping.

Here is a GIF David Farthing provided us of the play.

In my opinion, de Haan is in No Man's Land when Scheifele decides to make a play back up the boards and into the high slot. As de Haan is engaged, he widens his stance further to try and get a piece of Scheifele with his upper body. The result instead is a knee-on-knee collision that knocked Scheifele out of the game. It was an unfortunate hit, but in no way do I feel de Haan made it out of malice.

As of this writing, de Haan is not likely to face any supplemental discipline from the Czar of Player Safety, Brendan Shanahan.

The Jets were unable to score on their power play opportunity along with their four other man-advantage opportunities, ultimately succumbing to the Islanders 3-2 in overtime.

They will next play Thursday as they host the Los Angeles Kings.

UPDATE 9:56 AM: According to Twitter reports from Aaron Ward, Scheifele is likely to miss the next 6-8 weeks. When it rains, it pours.
