Prospects Snapshot: Winnipeg Jets CHL prospects after first round

QMJHL

Jan Kostalek; Rimouski Oceanic

Regular season: 55 GP, 5G 22A 27 PTS, 40 PIM, +10, 122 Shots, 4.1 Sh%

Playoffs: 1GP, 0G 0A 0 PTS, 2 PIM, +0, 2 Shots, 0 Sh%

QMJHL's third ranked Rimouski Oceanic swept their series against thirteenth ranked Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Oceanic dominated the series, outscoring their opponents 20 to 4. Kostalek received an upper body injury in the first game and has yet to return. There has been no word on how long he is expected to be out.

Rimouski will face 4th ranked Val-D’Or Foreurs in the next round. Oceanic has faced the Foreurs four times this season, with the series split at two each. The home team has won every game, but the Foreurs have outscored Oceanic 16 to 14. Val-D'Or has scored 48 more goals this season than Rimouski, although they have also allowed 19 more goals against.

Post Publish Edit: I had wrongfully read the QMJHL playoff bracket. The Oceanic will be facing Blainville-Boisbriand, Armada.

OHL

Scott Kosmachuk; Guelph Storm

Regular season: 68 GP, 49G 52A 101PTS, 83 PIM, +52

Playoffs: 5GP, 2G 3A 5 PTS, 15 PIM, +5

OHL's top ranked Guelph Storm won their series against fourteenth ranked Plymouth Whalers, four games to one. The top offensive team in the OHL outscored their opponents 24 to 8. Kosmachuk is one of eight players on the Guelph Storm who were point per game players while playing at least 3 games.

The Storm will face 3rd ranked London Knights in the next round. Guelph has faced London six times this season, with the series split at three each. The Knights have outscored the Storm 28 to 27. However, Guelph has scored 24 more goals this season and have allowed twelve less against than London.

Jimmy Lodge; Saginaw Spirit

Reg season: 59 GP, 19G 27A 46 PTS, 49 PIM, +5

Playoffs: 4GP, 2G 2A 4 PTS, 2 PIM, +1

Eleventh ranked Saginaw Spirit lost the series four games to one against the second ranked Errie Otters. The Connor McDavid led Otters outscored the Spirit 23 to 18 although, three of the games went to overtime, and one of the non-overtime games was decided by one goal. Thus ends Lodge's playoffs. Lodge was part of a four-way tie for third in points for the Spirit.

Next year may be very different for Jimmy Lodge, as the Saginaw Spirit may lose all three of their top scorers to pro next year. Eric Locke, Kristoff Kontos, and Justin Kea may all be lost to pro next year.

WHL

Ryan Olsen; Kelowna Rockets

Regular season: 71 GP, 30G 34A 64 PTS, 73 PIM, +37

Playoffs: 5GP, 1G 1A 2 PTS, 0 PIM, +0

Top ranked Kelowna Rockets eliminated the seventeenth ranked Tri-City Americans in five games, outscoring the Americans 18 to 10. At two points, Olsen has hardly provided dominant offense, but he has been noticeably defensively responsible.

Kelowna will face seventh ranked Seattle Thunderbirds. In the four times they have met, Kelowna has won three games and outscored Seattle 16 to 13. Two of their games have gone to shootout, with each team taking one in the coin toss match.

Joshua Morrissey; Prince Albert Raiders

Regular season: 59 GP, 28G 45A 73PTS, 59 PIM, +6

Playoffs: 4GP, 1G 2A 3 PTS, 6 PIM, -1

Fourteenth ranked Prince Albert Raiders were swept in four games by the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Oil Kings outscored the Raiders 18 to 9. Joshua Morrisey was tied with potential 2014 draft prospect Leon Draisaitl for second in team points, each with a goal and two assists.

Morrissey has been assigned to St. John's IceCaps and will likely be seeing some minutes with both Zach Redmond and Ben Chiarot called up to the main club. Next season may be interesting, with both Morrissey and Draisaitl have a small shot at making the NHL next season.

Eric Comrie; Tri-City Americans

Regular season: 60 GP, 2000 SA, 0.925 Sv%

Playoffs: 5GP, 206 SA, 0.917 Sv%

See Ryan Olsen's section for series notes.

The fact that Tri-City was even in the playoffs is a huge nod to Comrie. The Americans were the third lowest scoring team in the WHL, but luckily for them they had the second highest save percentage goaltender. However, a goalie can only take a team so far… especially when the team is giving up over 40 shots against a game in the playoffs.

Nic Petan; Portland Winterhawks

Regular season: 63 GP, 35G 78A 113PTS, 69 PIM, +47

Playoffs: 4GP, 1G 3A 4 PTS, 2 PIM, +2

Second ranked Portland Winterhawks swept the sixteenth ranked Vancouver Giants, outscoring them soundly 19 to 7. A point per game has Petan in 4th for his team forward scoring.

The Winterhawks will face Axel Blomqvist's Victoria Royals next series. The Royals have won three games out of four this season, with Portland scoring two goals in all four meetings. Overall the goal differential has been 10 to 8 in the Royals favour.

Axel Blomqvist; Victoria Royals

Regular season: 46 GP, 16G 27A 43PTS, 14 PIM, +24

Playoffs: 4GP, 0G 1A 1 PTS, 4 PIM, +2

The fifth ranked Victoria Royals swept the ninth ranked Spokane Chiefs, outscoring them 14 to 7. Blomqvist has predominately held off the score sheet, but small samples are small samples.

For next series notes, see Nic Petan's section.
