Both teams skated to a scoreless draw through the first period before the Avs drew first blood less than five minutes into the second frame. Resident fourth-liner John Mitchell took a centring pass from the stick of Tyson Barrie and deposited it between the legs of Al Montoya. It took the Jets ten minutes to respond on the scoreboard as two goals from Dustin Byfuglien in a two minute span to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
The shift in momentum would be short-lived as Colorado defenceman Andre Benoit unleashed an absolute buzz bomb to tie things at two apiece just twelve seconds before the intermission.
Just like the first, both sides skated to a scoreless tie in the third period prompting overtime. It was in the extra stanza that Colorado forward Matt Duchene walked around Dustin Byfuglien in the corner and threw a puck towards Winnipeg's net. The shot was deflected away by Tobias Enstrom but wound up back on the stick of Duchene who bounced a shot over the shoulder of Montoya earning the Avalanche an additional point.
Winnipeg will now be off until Wednesday when they will host the Vancouver Canucks.
