Winter Olympics Sochi 2014: Canada vs. Austria Men’s Hockey Recap

Canada took to the ice again this morning for their second game in as many days at the Sochi Olympics and delivered a performance that their fans are much more accustomed to.

Powered by a natural hat trick from Jeff Carter, Canada raced out to an early lead, eventually defeating the Austrians by a final score of 6-0. Roberto Luongo earned the shutout blocking all 23 shots he faced in the victory.

Canada began their dominance early in the first period when a seeing-eye shot from Drew Dougthy found its way through a maze of traffic and in the back of the net, cementing a lead that would last the rest of the game only five minutes in. Shea Weber extended the margin to 2-0 midway through the frame with another well-placed slap shot, his second of the tournament.

It was in the middle stanza that Mike Babcock's Canadians did the bulk of their damage, carried by the aforementioned hat trick from Jeff Carter. Ryan Getzlaf scored his first of the tournament at the tail end of the second, giving Canada all the offense they would need to coast through the third period.

Mathias Lange was tasked with tending the Austrian goal for the third period and held Canada scoreless, making fifteen saves in the process.

Penalties were again a point of concern for the Canadians who took four minor penalties in the game.

Nevertheless, the Canadians remain perfect on the tournament thus far, setting up an all important match-up against Finland on Sunday morning. The winner of Sunday's contest will emerge the top seed in Group B setting up for a favourable opponent in the Quarterfinals taking place next week.
