October Winnipeg Jets Prospect Tracker: CHL Edition

Once a month we’ll look at how the Winnipeg Jets prospects are doing.

2012 2nd Round: C Lukas Sutter; 7GP, 2G, 2A, 4PTS, -2, 6PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 2 0.286 0.286 0.571
2012-13 1 0.181 0.153 0.333
2011-12 0 0.400 0.443 0.843

Sutter started the season strong with four points in four games, and was only left off the score sheet once. Unfortunately, Sutter sustained an upper body injury after game four and only just recently returned. He has been pointless since his being back. We should expect greater numbers from the overaged centre, as he is getting far more minutes than his last season with playing in the team's top six instead of the fourth line, plus he is now seeing power play usage. Lukas is determined to prove last year an anomaly, and the Jets hope he succeeds.

2012 3rd Round: RW Scott Kosmachuk; 15GP, 14G, 13A, 27PTS, +18, 28PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 2 0.933 0.867 1.800
2012-13 1 0.515 0.441 0.956
2011-12 0 0.448 0.433 0.881

Kosmachuk has started the OHL season on quite the hot streak. Known for being a streaky scorer, Kosmachuk has picked up a point in all but three games. He's also been awarded 2 first, 1 second and 3 third stars in his 12 games. Kosmachuk received the OHL Player of the Week award for his six goals and three assists in three games in October 14-20. He is threatening for OHL lead in points and goals, and should have a decent shot at the OHL goal scoring title by season's end. If Kosmachuk can sustain most of this pace, he may earn himself a shot at the World Juniors filling a role similar to Lipon last season.

2012 6th Round: C Ryan Olsen; 13GP, 3G, 10A, 13PTS, +9, 20PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 2 0.231 0.769 1.000
2012-13 1 0.464 0.348 0.812
2011-12 0 0.224 0.254 0.478

Olsen started off the season slow but has dramatically picked things up. The big two-way centre has picked up 10 assists in his last ten games. While Olsen sees a lot of ice time with centring the second line, he faces a lot of the tough minutes which has made Olsen dependent on power play time for obtaining large point totals. Thus far, two goals and three assists have come from the power play.

2013 1st Round: LD Joshua Morrissey; 13GP, 5G, 9A, 14PTS, +3, 12PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2012-13 1 0.385 0.692 1.077
2011-12 0 0.214 0.457 0.671

Morrissey has been very consistent, with picking up points in all but two games. He's been playing well in the shutdown role for even strength and penalty kill minutes but has been shinning brightest in the power play. His four goals and five assists on the power play are up there for top in the WHL for defensemen. Morrissey is third on the Raiders for points and second in points per game. Currently the WHL has quite a few defensemen above a point per game, but very few of them will hold on to this pace for long. Morrissey looks like to be a contender for the World Juniors, although as a '95 and Canada's defensive depth, it is far from a guarantee.

2013 2nd Round: C Nicolas Petan; 15GP, 9G, 21A, 30PTS, +13, 20PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2012-13 1 0.600 1.400 2.000
2011-12 0 0.648 1.042 1.690

Can Petan actually sustain two points per game average? It seems ridiculous, but if anyone can, Petan is probably the guy. Petan has only twice been scoreless and has amassed eleven multi-point games. Not to be outdone by Kosmachuk, Petan was awarded WHL Player of the Week for the same week, recording two goals and five assists over three games. The Winterhawks are on a eight game winning streak, and Petan playing top line, top penalty kill and the point on the primary power play unit has been a major factor. Petan's hockey IQ is unworldly; if he gains sufficient strength, don't be surprised if he makes some noise at next years camp. Also, Petan is the Jets' strongest chance to have a skater on Team Canada.

2013 2nd Round: G Eric Comrie; 15 GP, 503 SA, SV% 0.924

Year Rel Draft GP SA SV%
2013-14 1 15 503 0.924
2013-13 0 37 1118 0.915

Comrie has seen a lot of rubber and currently holds the 3rd highest save percentage in the league. The Tri-City Americans are not exactly one of the stronger teams in the WHL and Comrie is seeing the third most amount of shots per game of those in the top ten in save percentage. The Americans are 7-7-1 and without the young goaltender it would likely be much worse, as the team is seldom not dominated (hey, wait… I thought good save percentage can't happen on crappy teams). Comrie will likely be one of the three goaltenders sent to the WJC but the question remains which one he will be.

2013 3rd Round: RW Jimmy Lodge; 10GP, 2G, 5A, 7PTS, +1, 10PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2012-13 1 0.200 0.500 0.700
2011-12 0 0.438 0.609 1.047

Lodge missed most of the Team USA and Jets training camps over the summer due to injury. He came into the season with some high expectations after producing over a point per game last year. He finally started his season on September 19th and picked up two assists in the game. Lodge then went the next seven games with only four points. There has been some speculation that he was still injured, which was strengthened by him re-agrevating the injury and missing more time. Lodge has since returned and has one assist in two games and been a +3. Lodge has predominately played the right wing this season, although to me his play seems more fitting as a centre.

2013 4th Round: RD Jan Kostalek; 15GP, 1G, 6A, 7PTS, +7, 10PIM, 2.6 Sh%

2012-13 1 0.067 0.400 0.467
2011-12 0 0.104 0.271 0.375

Kostalek had a solid start, picking up four assists in five preseason games, but eventually slowed down and went scoreless for the first five games of the regular season. Things have picked back up again, with Kostalek potting one goal and six assists in the last seven games. QMJHL is a lot more statistically friendly, tracking both shots and scoring chances. The Czech blue liner has averaged more than two shots per a game and has created eleven scoring chances. leading his team's defensemen in both categories. His 2.6 shooting percentage is nearly a third of last season, so expect some more goals if he continues. Kostalek should be all but a guarantee on the Czech WJC squad.

2013 UFA: RW Axel Blomqvist; 10GP, 4G, 4A, 8PTS, -2, 6PIM

Year Rel Draft G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2012-13 1 0.400 0.400 0.800
2011-12 0 0.119 0.441 0.559

Blomqvist was passed over in the NHL Entry Draft, but was offered a chance to prove himself at the Jets prospects and training camp. He obviously impressed and the 6’6 Swedish winger was signed to an ELC. While Blomqvist’s eight points in ten games isn’t earth shattering, he is currently fourth in his team in points and second in points per game for a struggling Hurricanes squad. The large forward had an impressive campaign in the Swedish U18 leagues and it will be interesting to see if his production can translate well over in North America.
