Derek Meech will replace Zach Redmond as the St. John’s IceCaps representative at this weekend’s AHL All-Star Game

Zach Redmond’s plane ticket to the AHL All-Star Game has been cancelled and Derek Meech has been called to take his place in this weekend’s festitivites in Providence, RI, as originally reported by Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Redmond — who is still skating as an active member of the Winnipeg Jets roster — has yet to garner any playing time, but with a blue line that is less one Zach Bogosian and features a grenade-handling pairing of Grant Clitsome and Paul Postma, the call could literally come at any time for him to suit up.

Meech, a 28-year old Winnipeg native, currently leads the IceCaps in points by active defensemen — at least while both Redmond and Postma are collecting NHL pay cheques — making him a no-brain selection as an Eastern Conference replacement.

The AHL All-Star Skills competition will air at 6:00PM CST on Sunday, January 27th while the All-Star Game kicks off at 6:00PM CST Monday, January 28. Full details of the event can be found at www.theahl.com.
