Instant Recap: The Winnipeg Jets fall short in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins

Recap:

The Jets put together a far better effort today than they did in the season opener and it netted them a better result. This was a much more exciting hockey game too. Both teams played with speed and completed passes to sticks instead of skates.

Chris Thorburn opened the scoring 1:58 into the game. Brad Marchand evened things up at 14:12 and while the scoring stopped there, the chances didn’t. The game had a frantic pace through the first period and was a steady end to end game throughout.

From here the Jets head out to DC to take on the Washington Capitals in their second game in back-to-back nights. It will be interesting to see if last year’s road struggles carry over or if the new year brings better fortunes.

Ten Thoughts:

Top to bottom, the performances were better. The team played with a lot of speed and used their size effectively. Size and speed. Size and speed. Size and speed. Noel likes these things.

  • Ondrej Pavelec and the posts did a nice job thwarting the Bruins. In all seriousness, Pavs made a number of really nice saves and he really didn’t have much of chance on the lone regulation goal. The shootout continues to be a weak spot.
  • Speaking of that goal, it was preventable. Jets captain Andrew Ladd had an ugly giveaway at the Jets blue line and Buff got caught watching some good hockey.
  • Noel can juggle. Kane, Olli and Little is a thing. Poni, Slater and Thorburn happened too. Wellwood got benched, Burmi did too. Mark Scheifele played less than 9 minutes. The line juggling leaves lots of question marks heading into tomorrow night.
  • Apparently Alexander Burmistrov, Kyle Wellwood and Scheifele’s benching wasn’t performance related. Coach Noel said it was largely about faceoffs and getting lost at the end of the short bench. All three of them flashed some nice ability.
  • Evander Kane and Olli Jokinen got their speed game going today and they really started to fly when Bryan Little was moved to their wing. Could this be the Jets new top line? If so, does Scheifele get a look between Ladd and Wheeler?
  • Kane appears to be making a conscious effort to pass, and though it hasn't resulted in any points, he has been one of the Jets' better players through two games. He has been doing a great job with zone entries too. Also, no cardio issues and multiple moves. Take that you big, dumb KHL coach.

  • Ron Hainsey played 3:25 short handed and 25:29 overall. He was once again 3rd in ice time. Ron is being asked to carry a heavy load and he looked looked a lot better today. Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstom played BIG minutes too, 30:27 and 29:54 respectively.
  • Two games in and the Postman has an assist plus two posts. Paul Postma may have some issues in his own zone, but he is definitely a threat offensively. If he can find himself in his own end, he is an undeniable weapon.
  • The Jets have done a great job of minimizing their penalties, but they haven't been taking advantage with the man advantage. The Jets have scored one goal in ten tries. Of course a big night tomorrow could make the numbers look a lot better, but failed zone entries and sloppy play at the points need to go away. The Jets could have outright won this game with power plays to close out both regulation and OT.
