(SB Nation) -- The Winnipeg Jets will see one of their top players go under the knife on Friday, as the team announced on Thursday that the 22-year-old Zach Bogosian will have surgery on his right wrist. Illegal Curve had the statement released by head physician Dr. Peter MacDonald:

"Winnipeg Jets defenseman, Zach Bogosian, has been diagnosed with a chronic ligament tear in his right wrist. During off-season training, Zach experienced discomfort and was limited in his performance. Zach will thus undergo surgery this upcoming Friday performed by Dr. Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio."

As of the announcement and statement released by the team, there is no timetable for Bogosian's return. The usage of the word "chronic" to describe the ligament tear certainly sounds ominous for them, though. Bogosian is coming off his best season as a professional, scoring five goals with 25 assists in 65 games with the Jets.

The statement notes that Dr. Thomas Graham is the surgeon who will perform on Bogosian, with notes that he has operated on many players in MLB, the NHL and the NBA. Bogosian was the third overall pick in the 2008 draft and has 29 goals and 89 points with Atlanta/Winnipeg.
