Altitude Check: Thursday February 9, 2012 Winnipeg Jets News Headlines
Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what's going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets.
Here is what's in the news for Thursday, February 9, 2012:

Fancy Stats guru Neil Greenberg notes that "bubble teams" rarely go far in the playoffs - something which does not bode well for either the Caps or the Jets: "If we look at post-lockout teams that were on the bubble for a playoff spot, defined here as within five points of the eight seed (both ahead and behind) as of March 1st, 34 of the 77 (44 percent) did not qualify for the post-season. Of the 43 teams that did qualify, 24 failed to make it out of round one and another 12 didn't make it past round two. That means almost 84 percent of those teams have not made it past the Conference semifinals. Hardly the (familiar) result Washington is looking for." [Washington Post]
The Jets will have their hands full with Dmitri Orlov tonight. Orlov is quickly becoming one of Washington's more reliable defensemen this season. [Washington Times]
Evander Kane off-ice story lines are getting beaten to death. Gary brings the conjecture, you draw the conclusions! [WFP]
Could Winnipeg be the host site of a 2014 Heritage Classic? The Free Press seems to think so: "A source has told the Free Press the league has taken the next step in their study by contacting Environment Canada seeking data on weather patterns in Winnipeg for January and February. Now, while that may seem like a given -- most Winnipeggers would offer up their own forecast as cold with the chance of more cold -- it does indicate how seriously the NHL is considering the Manitoba capital as a future site for a Heritage Classic outdoor game, perhaps in 2014."[WFP]
Cam Charron - who has become one of my favorite bloggers - offers a great stats driven article on what it will take to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The Jets will have their hands full. [Jets Nation]
How do the Jets feel about the fast approaching Trade Deadline? "You never want to see a guy leave the dressing room," Thorburn said. "We’ve created some great bonds in here." [Toronto Sun]
Kyle Wellwood is still suffering from a bout with the flue and did not travel with the team on their trip to Washington and Pittsburgh. [Twitter, via Winnipeg Jets]
Even though he has been reduced to back-up duties for the Capitals, I feel it's important that Jets fans learn the proper pronunciation of Michal Neuvirth's name. It's NOYV--IRRT. Not NEW-VIRTH. Not NY-VEERT. Not NOY-VEERT. NOYV-IRRT. [Wikipedia]
Finally, that rumbling you feel beneath your feet - yeah, that's The Rapture coming. Olli Jokinen capped of Calgary Flames 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks by scoring a hat-trick. We're as good as doomed. [NHL.com]

What you meant to write is NOY-virrt. Upper case letters are used to indicate stress so writing the whole name that way kind of defeats the purpose. Most people would also split the syllables like I did and not as you did.
I don’t think Thorburn needs to worry. I’m not seeing many Jets as attractive buys for most teams. If they can possibly dump Oduya for anything that’s not a complete joke they should consider doing so. Oduya will need to take a huge pay cut on his next contract and the reality of baseball and hockey is that a pay cut that large can only be swallowed by the player and his agent if they change teams. So it’s better to get something for Oduya than to lose him for nothing. Fehr should be traded too if possible. I cannot imagine any reason why he would want to return to the Jets nor why they would want him back. Perhaps trading him now while he might still have some value (3rd round pick?) has merits.
Out of curiosity
Would you trade Dustin Byfuglien?

Fehr has no trade value a present, so moving him isn’t an option. They will give him a QO in the off-season and he will be back another 1/2 years.

I can't imagine him being this unlucky two years in a row.
…and hopefully recovery won’t eat into part of his season. I think we get a pretty good deal on a solid 3rd line player next year. His underlying numbers are pretty good His shooting % and on ice % percentage can’t repeat. His shot is supposed to be the best part of his game.
Anybody have thoughts to think on this piece?
Trade Deadline: Byfuglien More Important Than You Think

I'll read the article when I get a chance, likely tomorrow,
but Postma could probably be Buff-lite at a cheaper rate. That and his defensive screw ups are so, so costly for us.

I think it's bullshit
honest opinion. here are my issues with it:
1) he does little to actually develop his own idea of Byfuglien’s importance other than GAA
2) he piggybacks on someone elses main idea and blathers for days without quoting or linking the article in question
3) i have no idea what his point was. should the Jets keep him? should they trade him for an inflated value? what are you getting at?
4) Rhetorical question to conclude. Listen I don’t give a shit what you write. Convince me. If you have convictions, sell me on why you believe something. Enough with the maybe, but maybe not bullshit. Grow some balls and draw a conclusion that you can stand behind.

....
and yes, I know I did this with a Semin fluff piece. that will be the first and last time you read that from me. also, to clarify, he links a website, that’s it. use quotations to enhance your article. or at the very least, provide a hyperlink to the actual article. your boy does all the leg work, you scam him and can’t even give a hyperlink? get real.

i actually secretly loved it.
it was so good I had to bash it to try to divert readers from it. I post my true thoughts on it in tomorrow’s headlines.

To echo what TJCAPS said, that HockeyBuzz article is uh... not very good
It’s pretty clear he had no understanding of the article he referenced. The David Johnson article is not a ranking of defenseman at all, it’s a ranking of their impact on SV%. Just looking at the names – Shane O’Brian is 6th, ffs. That right there should have raised a red flag.

Well, if the guy had stuck around for the "Update"
when David adjusts for quality of competition, Byfuglien dropped out of the 25. And really, there’s two things to keep in mind:
1.) The biggest knocks against Bustin are the competition he’s faced and the amount of time he’s given in the offensive zone, and
2.) He didn’t play defence for four years, which is the length of the linked study.
