Altitude Check: Monday February 13, 2012 Winnipeg Jets News Headlines
Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what's going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets.
Here is what's in the news for Monday, February 13, 2012:
Digesting Saturday's blowout at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins "Let's get past the BS, we got outplayed, didn't do enough to win. It would be really hard to go over the whole thing. You just cut through most of the BS (and say) we just gave up way too much close to our net and gave up eight goals. Very difficult to overcome." - Ron Hainsey [WFP]
Hey, there were some positives to giving up an eight spot. [Winnipeg Sun]
Tim Campbell crunches the numbers, deducing power play chances are down league-wide as he diagnoses where the Jets stand on special teams. [WFP]
Mark Chipman takes author Mario Lefebvre to task for questioning Winnipeg's longevity as a viable NHL market. [WFP]
Yahoo! Sports blogger Adam Martini on how the Jets actions must speak louder than their words. [Yahoo! Sports]
Mark Scheifele Upper Deck hockey card creates buzz as a coveted collectors item. [THW]
Winnipeg Jets prospect Vinny Saponari has carved himself a nice little niche this year on a sub-par Northeastern team. Saponari - a 2008 draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers - was dismissed from Boston University for an alcohol-related incident in 2010. After playing a year in the USHL, he is now one of the Huskies leading scorers, posting 19 points in 27 games this season including Friday's game winner. [Hockey Journal]
How is the return of the Jets is affecting Winnipeg's junior hockey attendance? Amusing that local media covers this, but failed to show up when the NCAA was in town - a league that affords many MJHL graduates a chance to play past their junior careers. I guess junior hockey is only a convenient topic when players are making money (or in this case, not making money) for their league and Hockey Manitoba. [Winnipeg Sun]
It's official, the 2013 Winter Classic will take place at the Big House in Ann Arbor, MI where the Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs. I am over the moon to watch Pavel Datsyuk, Mike Babcock, Brian Burke and Dion Phaneuf in next year's HBO 24/7. [NHL.com]
Finally, I meant to promote this last week, but Nate Ewell and College Hockey Inc. came out with a fantastic NCAA College Hockey player database that tracks alumni now tied to all thirty NHL clubs. Fantastic tool for anyone who enjoys College Hockey and tracing hockey's lineage. [College Hockey Inc.]

love all the college hockey talk

going to continue to incorporate diversity
Lot of good hockey related stories that don’t pertain directly to the Jets. Constantly linking WFP and The Sun gets old fast.
Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!

lots of Canadians aren't able to revel in the experience
Being so close to UND, I have been able to attend a few games there and as I have said before, it’s an atmosphere that cannot be recreated by any other league.
Now that the Score! has picked up more College games, Canadians are getting more exposure to the brand.
That said, I’m also ecstatic that Sportsnet has picked up CHL games on Friday nights. Major Junior and College hockey should be more accessible for fans to help grow the sport.

Apparently the Leafs Gunnarsson got injured in practice today and will be going for a scan.
I hate to see anybody get hurt, but this could really damage their hopes of making the playoffs.
