Monday Morning Altitude Check: Gary Lawless blasts Evander Kane and Ondrej Pavelec for poor performance in Euro Leagues

Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what’s going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets and elsewhere in the NHL.

Here is what's in the news for Monday, November 19, 2012:

Gary Lawless takes out the hatchet to disembowel the recent play of Evander Kane and Ondrej Pavelec. While both have been far from spectacular — and believe me, we’ve taken our shots — it should be noted that they haven’t been the only NHLers to struggle adjusting to the European game. My concern will mount if their poor play continues once the NHL season begins. [WFP]

It just so happens that Jacob Trouba and I both have something in common: “I’m not the best public speaker. I’m getting through (speech class). It’s presentations, speeches. Do the research, put it together and get in front of the class and do it.” [WFP]

Paul Postma believes the St. John’s IceCaps still need to find their identity in order to be more successful this year: “We have a fairly similar team to last year but we still have to find our identity I think,” said Postma, who is regaining some of his own form after missing the first eight games. I think certain players still have to find their roles and stick to what makes us successful.” [WFP]

Keith McCambridge was not happy with the team's performance in a 5-3 loss to Albany at home on Saturday: "It looked like we were playing with a tennis ball and they were playing with a hockey puck out there. It’s not even close to good enough for me right now." [The Telegram]

The Goals for Dreams Hockey Challenge went extremely well this weekend, raising $80,000.00 and drawing 1,700 fans to the Max Bell Arena. Jonathan Toews felt good getting back out on the ice in front of a large crowd: “The fans were great and you could tell they were excited to watch some hockey and have their Jets back. Everyone knows it was an exciting year last year and I was excited to get my chance to come back here and play here in October and that didn’t happen unfortunately.” [Winnipeg Sun]

Jonathan Willis does some cyber sleuthing to conclude that the BankAtlantic Center — home of the Florida Panthers — which is owned and operated by Sunrise Sports and Entertainment and the Arena Operating Company has yet to post negative margins in their twelve year history. Their worst season from an earnings standpoint coincided with the 2005 NHL lockout. [Edmonton Journal]
