Game Thread: Jets vs. Rangers

Winnipeg Jets at New York Rangers, Jan 24, 2012 7:00 PM EST

Game 50 on the season sees the Jets visit the Big Apple for their final game before the All-Star Break. Unfortunately, it is one of those pesky back-to-back games where we are 0-7 on the year. What can we expect out of the Jets tonight?

Star-divide

Not much to this game thread because the game's already started. so here we go. Go Jets Go!

Sorry for the bare-bones game thread

but I just whipped it up quickly once I noticed we didn’t have one.

1-0 Rangers already. Thorburn hurt in a fight. Mittens took a Bogo clapper in the mid-section. Lovely start.

Glad Mittens is okay.

Sucks to lose Thorburn after his best game all season.

Thor is back already.

That is good.

I like Cormier's game.

If we lose Slater or Glass either at the deadline or as UFAs Cormier will slot in there nicely.

by truck on Jan 24, 2012 7:31 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Agreed.

I thought he looked really solid in the pre-season. He is the type of guy that I could see building a checking line around.

Holy blocked shots Batman.

The Rangers sure do know how to get into shooting lanes. Wow.

He's looked okay

with Cormier and Fehr. Small sample size, but so far so good.

I like seeing the Jets on MSG network, and playing in NYC

I like the awareness and publicity it brings to the city.

Now we just need to find a way to win this game

We need to remedy these slow starts.

We’re not good enough to play from behind consistently.

After watching this 1st period

it pains me to see how ineffective we are offensively. All of our chances (if you could call them that) were from the perimeter, and most of them were blocked anyways. Nothing down low or in the slot. You know, the dirty areas.

We have 8 players who have scored 20+ goals.

Plus Kane and Burmi who are destined to score at least that many.

A lot of times the difference is luck.

Weak call on Slater

but the PK looked solid.

Thorburn vs. Rupp - Round 2

Thor looks like he’s gone 2-0 in the two scraps, but both fights ended up with him looking like he hurt his arm/shoulder.

Now that was a hard-working shift.

Loved the effort that Glass-Slater-Gagnon just displayed, as the Jets hemmed in the Rangers for well over a minute. The compete level is high yet again, but unfortunately so is the lack of finish.

Unreal.

The Jets play well for most of the 2nd period, and then Pav lets in a stinker. 2-0 Rangers. And a deflated team.

No puck luck right now.

Ladd stopped on 2-on-1, followed by Wheeler banking one off of the inside of the post that somehow doesn’t hit Lundqvist’s pad as it goes through goal mouth.

PP chance though to maybe get back into it.

No good on the PP.

Even with an extra skater we are still a perimeter team.

We have played well again, at least we can take solace in that.

We are also making our trade deadline decisions quite easy.

Don't get me wrong,

the playoffs would be UNREAL. But for the long-term health of the franchise you are right, a top-10 pick certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Yup, it stings.

Our playoff chances have got to be on life support now. However, going into the season we all pretty much expected to not be near the playoffs, so I’m okay with that. We know this team needs a lot of changes, and at least there is not an opportunity to be delusional about it.

For instance, there is absolutely no sense in keeping Wellwood (unless you sign him to a long term deal before the deadline). Antropov? See ya. My favourite defensemen: Oduya, Hainsey, Buff. If you find a taker, you sell.

Antropov and Hainsey will be hard to move this year.

Moving Buff would be a mistake.

Then we would have depth issues on both offence and defense.

by truck on Jan 24, 2012 8:53 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I worry about Buff's longterm health.

Knee injury + lots of weight = ?

Plus I think his contract is a burden and lacks defensive responsibility. I also think we could get at least something substantial in return for him. I think Antropov’s going out the door at the deadline, honestly. Hainsey unfortunately will be here to ruin more of my hockey nights.

Section 325

does not like Hainsey. It’s pure coincidence that I’m in that section, too…

Do you think Antropov is desirable enough for a team to eat his 4.5 mill next year.

Any team near the cap is already out of the running.

That said if a team can stick him on their 3rd line or on the wing it would be a better role for him and he could help.

by truck on Jan 24, 2012 9:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

His contract isn't crazy compared to players like

Erhoff, Campbell, Antropov, Hainsey and Oduya.

Long term health could be an issue I suppose, but he has been pretty durable. Prior to this year he only missed 5 total games over 3 seasons.

7 players who have scored 20+

Plus Burmi, Kane and Wellwood is some decent skill.

I don’t want them to do anything crazy to shake up the young core.

Media members always make a big deal about 0.500.

We are not a 0.500 team, that’s overly generous. 22-22-6 means we won 22/50.

At least they're playing hard for Noel.

I really do like Noel as a coach, I just think we need to give him some better players.

Craig Ramsay was beloved in Atlanta. Hitler had tons of supporters too. Stalin still does in parts of Russia. Yes, for sure the Jets need better players and you are paying for Don Waddell’s sins, but Noel IS part of the problem. You will not make the playoffs until he is gone.

by Zontar on Jan 24, 2012 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think you are very wrong.

Noel is awesome. He has done a great job keeping a very injured team competitive.

Craig Ramsay failed to lead Atlanta to the playoffs. His current team is trending down wards as well. I’m awfully glad that Ramsay was released by TN.
