Ehrhoff not worth $40M

Like you needed me to tell you that. 40% of the time that Christian Ehrhoff was on the ice, the Sedins were there too. Ehrhoff got easy ice time – either the 5th- or 6th-softest on the team this season, and the highest percentage of faceoffs in the offensive zone among the defensive corps.

Not only that, but he didn't outshine his teammates in scoring at 5-on-5:

Defenseman 5v5 P/60 Henrik% Daniel% Ozone% 5v4TOI 4v5TOI
Bieksa 0.99 30.7 29.1 46.1 1.7 2.6
Edler 0.95 41.3 39.7 59.6 3.6 2.1
Hamhuis 0.82 31.9 30.4 49.7 1.6 3.0
Ehrhoff 0.82 40.4 38.9 61.5 3.5 2.1
Alberts 0.75 23.8 23.0 40.8 0.1 1.6
Salo 0.59 31.8 29.7 53.5 1.9 2.7
Ballard 0.47 24.4 23.1 44.0 0.2 1.6
Rome 0.22 25.3 24.0 44.2 0.4 1.7

No, Ehrhoff’s gaudy point total came exclusively from his high power-play usage. That wasn’t worth 5 years and $26M when 26-year-old Dustin Byfuglien signed his extension in Atlanta, and it certainly isn’t worth the 7 years and $37M at the core of the 29-year-old Ehrhoff’s contract. Buffalo made a smart move just a few days ago acquiring Robyn Regehr and more than erased it today with the Ehrhoff deal.
