Winnipeg's New Team: What's in a Name?
I recently wrote a guest article for Oilers Refinery on what Winnipeg HC could be called -- and in particular, what it shouldn't be called.

Good article. One of the better ones about using a name other than the Jets. May have convinced me even…
I’m betting on a compromise of calling them the Manitoba Jets. It does distinguish from the old Winnipeg team, but still allows the fans what they (overwhelmingly) want. You’re right about the economic factor however. Maybe a real cool jersey with totally different colours will fix that…
I still like the Falcons. Although some people have pointed out that that’s Atlanta’s NFL team.
Once a Rider fan, always a Rider fan.

I almost think that naming them the Falcons would be a good thing as indirect acknowledgement to the history of the franchise. I’m not sure how former Thrashers fans would take it though.

Yeah, the bird connection didn’t actually hit me until my girlfriend’s brother mentioned it last night. I just like it because it’s got a ton of history and doesn’t sound ridiculous like half of modern team names.
