Around SBN: This Should Encourage Juan Mata

The Jets claimed Ben Maxwell off waivers from the Ducks today and promptly assigned him to St. John's. They also reassigned Brett Festerling to the IceCaps after removing him from the IR.

It only took six teams in the last while, but I did it, I’m finally trending on twitter. #success

I thought Ben had a good chance of making the team coming out of camp.

I suppose he did make the team, but he didn’t stick. He is supposed to have a solid two way game and a bit of offensive flair, to go with some solid athleticism. I wonder why he hasn’t been able to put it together.

That said, I am glad we got him back.

This.

I am also pleased that we got him back, I was very impressed with his play in the little ice-time he was given. He can win draws, skate and seems solid defensively. I don’t expect to see him back with the Jets this year, but perhaps in the future.

Maxwell actually has few offensive capabilities and projects to be a typical low scoring 4th line NHLer. The truth is that if you are using him on your 3rd line you are in trouble, so that really limits him in the NHL. He’s a good kid and has a good attitude and no illusions about his future in the NHL, but he’s just a 4th liner and the Jets don’t need that right now. He is more or less another Jim Slater with significantly less offense but perhaps better defensive abilities.

This is a tough team to make for a bottom 6 forward.

Cheveldayoff seem to love finding low end bargain players. There’s about 8 guys fighting for a couple of roster spots.

Not sure if he’ll make it.

Very true.

Not sure either, but having him around competing won’t hurt.
