Production vs. Possession
I have been wondering about this ever since becoming comfortable with and recognizing the value of advanced statistics. I certainly realize the value of playing tough minutes, and controlling possession is certainly important. At the same time there is also an obvious value to scoring or setting up goals, and I try to be cognizant of making sure that is not discounted either when looking at advanced metrics.
With that in mind, I have always been wondering how much someone that puts up great production, yet is pretty bad possession-wise, is really worth. I realize you value someone of this nature less than the mainstream media does, but I also am aware that you still see the value in such players.
If you were a GM how much would you pay for someone like Ilya Kovalchuk (not the newer version that has dropped off in scoring too, but the version that was a world class point producer), or someone like Marian Gaborik (looking at this years version fantastic production, but high zone starts and still dominated possession-wise), or a Phil Kessel? Does Phil Kessel provide value for his contract? Does Marian Gaborik?
Would love thoughts and feedback.
