Steve Tambellini did better than stats

Dave Staples tells us that "if Oilers GM Steve Tambellini had relied only upon Corsi plus/minus to determine which players to cut from last year’s team" he would have gotten rid of some of his best players. Yeah, that's pretty much what happens when you use any one statistic to make player personnel decisions. Ironically, the Oilers have been so awful for the last two seasons that they may very well have been using only goals and assists to figure out who to sign. Actually, the Oilers were probably using giveaways (more = better) to figure out who to pick up. It is simply not an argument against systematic statistical analysis of the game of hockey to say that a cherry-picked statistic does not tell you exactly who should play on your team.
