Worst Single-Game Shot Differentials since 1994

The Edmonton Oilers gave away their entire defense this week and dressed a weaker roster than the Swiss brought to the Olympics against conference-leading Chicago.  The Oilers actually hung in for two periods, which made the Hawks' shot barrage against them all the much worse.  At the end of the game, Edmonton was outshot 47-14.  Where does that rank over the last 15 years?

Surprisingly, it barely cracks the top 25 - overall, the shots at net were 80-25 for Chicago, which might rank higher if we had missed shot and blocked shot data for all of these seasons.  We expected the Oilers to lose, but perhaps more surprisingly, teams that absolutely dominated their opponents in the shot count went just 14-9.  I can't imagine what that Bruins-Thrashers game in 2001 was like - counting all shots at net, Boston outshot Atlanta 76-23 and still lost.

And to think the Thrashers won 2 out of 3 of those games, just crazy. I remember the Boston one well.

Missing one

There was a game Nov. 14 where Nashville outshot Montreal 55-20 and won 2-0, but it looks as though you haven’t included games from this season on the list. Just an FYI.

You have correctly noted my laziness!

I had almost forgot that Montreal-Nashville game, too. I have completely forgotten that outshooting Carolina 45-10 game and losing 3-1 game as well, despite it being last year.

If Edmonton is worse than the Swiss, how does Chicago’s roster stack up internationally?

With Hiller in goal and a handful of real D, Switzerland could beat Edmonton seven times out of ten.

Chicago is probably competitive with Slovakia, though I’d give a slight edge to the Slovaks. The gap between two NHL teams is just not that large, though Chicago was favored almost 80% last night, not unlike a Slovakia-Germany tilt.

A game between Chicago and Slovakia would be swung substantially by which team got Hossa. As for Edmonton, they’re awful but still only have a five-point cushion on the Leafs and those Leaf forwards are pretty bad. It’ll still be quite the race I think.

I think in comparisons like this you assume Hossa gets cloned by Star Trek transporters and one of them gets handed a different jersey.

Kind of like putting the Slovakian national team and Chicago on NHL 10.

Or he just changes teams when one of them is doing poorly, like that guy at pickup who likes to take one for the team.

I’m fairly certain that the Montreal-Carolina game in question — the game where the shots were 45-10 — happened in 1999, rather than 2009.

The Habs haven’t outshot the opposition that badly in recent memory.

1999 would have been less likely, actually. That year’s team was brutal.

The 1999 team had a better shot ratio by a large margin.

In any event…

Pitt-NYR

Add another one to the top of the list. Pittsburgh outshot the Rangers 55-16 tonight.

Lunqvist was amazing.
