Canadian Shots vs Switzerland: nothing but bad luck

Say what you want about Canada's inability to score yesterday - they certainly got a lot of good scoring chances. Canada took 61 shots in total, including 30 shots inside the most dangerous zone on the ice, between the dots and below the top of the faceoff circle:

Against an average NHL goaltender and an average NHL defense, they'd have expected 5 or 6 goals. Against Jonas Hiller and the porous Swiss defense, perhaps 6 or 7. Getting only two goals was just bad luck.

PS - I have the right and left wings swapped. I'm just too lazy to re-do the diagram.

Hiller played an amazing game. It wasn’t “bad luck.”

Jonas Hiller is a .923 goaltender against NHL competition with a league-average NHL team in front of him. The Swiss would make an average to weak AHL team, even with Hiller and Streit. The Canadians are probably 75% better than the best NHL team – how good would the Sharks be if Thornton/Marleau/Heatley was their second line and they had Crosby/Nash/Iginla as the first line and they had Niedermayer and Duncan Keith?

Play the game 100 times – how often do the AHLers score two goals? How often does Hiller save 44 of 46 shots? This was a freak outcome.

Dang! This is awesome stuff. Who is noting shot locations for you to scrape up or is this more “not publicly avaliable” data?

Scott – I’m just looking over the shot charts that Olivier posted from CTV/BBC and counting the shots by hand.
