Finnish SM-Liiga Goal Locations, 2009-10
The Finnish SM-Liiga has a real treasure trove of data. Most of it is basically the same as the NHL's data, but they also have exact locations where pucks went into the net. Not that we didn't already know what this chart was going to look like, but it's still interesting to see it:
The frequency of goal locations is instructive:
Put the puck right under the crossbar if you want to score - low glove side also works.

I guess I never realized how many goals were scored dead-center horizontally, but just under the pipe.

Probably when the goalie is down. Or its a scorer issue.

I was going to say that if I were a goalie, that hot spot right where my head should be would be making me nervous…

I would suspect many of those center top-shelf goals were scored from a steeper angle.
Mike Weber: Free to roam the ice and take stupid boarding penalties once more.
Everything wrong with the Sabres is Drew Stafford's fault.
That spot makes sense if the goalie is on either post.

I might actually lean towards scorer issue; my guess is that they are recording all shots over the goalie when he’s down as going dead-center top shelf, when in theory (if there’s so many being scored when he’s down) the whole top area should be either light blue or pale yellow.

Does the dark blue area look like Dr. Manhattan giving shooters the finger to anybody else?

Hmm
I was watching Oil Change on NHL Network (US) thanksgiving day and their goalie coach claimed that 65% of pucks went in under the height of the goalies pads. This begs to differ.

How tall was he? Because if he is about 20 feet tall, that might explain it.

I saw that too
and found it hard to believe. He probably wanted to encourage the kids not to be picking corners too much.

I’m shooting for that little blue dot right in the middle. Otherwise known as the Paajarvi Hole.

Shea Weber: So Pekka, I saw this cool chart at Behind the Net about where they score goals in the Finnish Elite League. Let’s see if I can score in those spots. aside: I bet I can score in the middle
Pekka Rinne: Sure, brings back memories. (aside) high glove, high blocker, low glove…

My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the most unpredictable team in the NHL and where we defend Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, and Alexander Semin until the bitter end. That is to say, when someone tries to call BS on the Corsi numbers.
