Leafs open to trading Garnet Exelby.  So?

Garnet Exelby, who's currently 9th on the Leafs defensive depth chart, is on the trading block.  Exelby is 24th out of 25 Leafs in terms of tough minutes this year.  Even so, his Corsi number is below the team average, and he takes more penalties than every non-goon on the roster.  Exelby does kill penalties, but even there, he's been on the third unit this season.  None of this is out-of-character for Exelby, either, so good luck moving him.  Basically Brian Burke is just saying that he's not trading anyone!

To think the Leafs gave Kubina for this guy…

Maybe they can trade him back to Atlanta for an extra pick?

Also, I don’t think it’s saying much to say he’s on the PK unit in Toronto, which still operating below 70% success.

Of all the head-scratching moves, Exelby was the one that generated the most bald spots.

The man is paid $1.725 million and he’s replacement-level at best. I think everyone can agree that he has absolutely no offensive upside, but they don’t realise that his defense is just as bad.

He’s had a GVT below replacement level for 2 years running, and Alan Ryder’s PCD consistently ranks him very safely below average, even in 2006-07 when his ESGAA was 1.78 and SHGAA 4.65.

He blocks shots (~5.8 per 60 minutes) and throws hits (~8.5 per 60 minutes), which some people confuse for results, but the only result that counts is keeping the puck out of the net, which he simply hasn’t done for years.

Some people in Atlanta confuse “results” with “willing to work hard”. XLB is a great person, that doesn’t make him a quality hockey player.
