Phil Kessel's first Peewee Game

Phil Kessel's debut as a Leaf came last night against Tampa.  He was certainly in on the action: 23:50 on the ice, including 8:57 on the power-play.  He ended up with 10 shots on goal, two shots wide of the net, and seven shots blocked by the Lightning.

Surprisingly, those ten shots on goal aren't a season high: Alex Ovechkin had the most (of course) with 13 on October 15th; Malkin had 12 on October 20th; and Jeff Carter and Dustin Penner both had 11, on October 24th and 22nd, respectively.

As for the 23:50 TOI, that's not even a season-high for a Toronto forward.  Lee Stempniak logged 26:25 against Montreal on Saturday.

Stempniak

Is there anything more depressing for a Leafs fans than reading that Lee Stempniak played over 26 minutes in one game this season?

Stempniak

I don’t see why that would be depressing, dude … Stempniak has been their best forward all season … forget last season, and watch his play … aside from being snakebit early in the season, he’s been defensively better, smarter with the puck, finding outlets and in a position to become an outlet for teammates….

I didn’t say Stempniak was a bad forward. I said it is depressing that a forward of his skill level plays 26 minutes one night for your team. It is great that he’s been strong defensively and finds outlet passes but you can find a ton of NHL players who can do that. 26 minutes, no matter how inflated by special teams, is ridiculous for a player of Stempniak’s skill level.

Prior to this season, Stempniak had never played more than 22:00 in a single game – in his career. He’s broken 22 three times in the last five games. I agree – it’s a bad sign when he’s getting that kind of TOI. Nobody thinks he’s good enough to get 5-10 extra shifts a game.

The Stempniak thing

shouldn’t be depressing since a large quantity of that ice time came as a result of his time on the point on the PP, when he was logging minutes as a D man. He played 6:27 on the PP, and another 4:11 on the PK. He only skated 15:47 at evens, so he wasn’t the leading forward in that regard (Mikhail Grabovski played 16:30 at ES).

That being said, Stempniak was on the ice for 6 goals in that game… 3 for and 3 against. Considering he ended up -2, he obviously wasn’t doing so great at even strength.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

Oh and I think it's more depressing for Leafs fans

to read that Andrew Raycroft is 2nd in the NHL in Save Percentage, and he also happens to have a 4-1 record this season for the Canucks.

Tuuka Rask, Andrew Raycroft… no luck.
